    This essay takes a media archaeological approach to putting forward haunted media as theory of mediation able to address contemporary networked writing practices communicated across and through multiple media, multiple iterations, multiple sites, and multiple times. Drawing upon Derrida’s invitation to consider the paradoxical state of the spectre, that of being/not-being, this paper considers the paradoxical state of long-distance communications networks. Both physical and digital, they serve as linguistic structures for modes of transmission and reception for digital texts. Composed of source code and output, these texts are neither here nor there, but rather here and there, past and future, original and copy. The in-between state has been articulated in terms of ‘medium’ in Western philosophy since classical times. The complex temporaility of this in-between state is further articulated in this essay through Alexander Galloway’s framing of the computer, not as an object, but rather as “a process or active threshold mediating between two states”.

  2. Narrative Affect in William Gillespie's Keyhole Factory and Morpheus: Biblionaut, or, Post-Digital Fiction for the Programming Era

    Programmable computation is radically transforming the contemporary media ecology. What is literature's future in this emergent Programming Era? What happens to reading when the affective, performative power of executable code begins to provide the predominant model for creative language use? Critics have raised concerns about models of affective communication and the challenges a-semantic affects present to interpretive practices. In response, this essay explores links between electronic literature, affect theory, and materialist aesthetics in two works by experimental writer and publisher William Gillespie.

    Focusing on the post-digital novel Keyhole Factory and the electronic speculative fiction Morpheus: Bilblionaut, it proposes that: first, tracing tropes of code as affective transmissions allows for more robust readings of technomodernist texts and, second, examining non-linguistic affect and its articulation within constraint-based narrative forms suggests possibilities for developing an affective hermeneutics.

    O experimentalismo português iniciou-se na década de 1960, com um propósito comum de conferir ao acto poético valores artísticos, políticos e sociológicos assentes numa ruptura de vanguarda. O presente ensaio situa a intervenção experimental como invenção, transgressão e metamorfose, visto que perpassa as obras dos autores de "Poesia Experimental" e, mais tarde, de um novo conjunto de autores que exploraram a poesia visual, sonora, digital e a performance. Através do arquivo Po-ex.net, que documenta e dissemina o seu estudo, traçam-se dois itinerários, revisitando algumas das obras com carácter interventivo e transformativo, desde os anos 1960 até à actualidade.

    Generatieve dichtkunst is een genre dat voor velen nog onbekend zal zijn. In dit artikel biedt literatuurwetenschapper Hannah Ackermans een nadere kennismaking met deze vorm van e-poëzie. Via een analyse van de online gedichtengenerator Taroko Gorge van Nick Montfort bespreekt zij hoe drie kenmerkende eigenschappen van generatieve literatuur, namelijk tijdgebondenheid, overwriting en remixen, spelen met het idee van auteurschap. In hoeverre is er nog sprake van een auteur als een algoritme de gedichten creëert?

  6. The Endgame or a Wake?: Tropes of Circularity in Literature Then and Now

    This paper argues that attending to the tropes of circularity featuring in print-based literature proves to be a useful foil for an analysis of electronic literature. Based on the idea that digital literary mechanisms do not obliviate previous circularity-inducing structuring motifs in analog literature, such as labyrinths, chess, rivers, and clockwork, this argument arrives at a crucial time for literature, which is currently the object of intensified debates on beginnings and ends, especially in the context of digitality and multisensory perception becoming central to some aspects of its processes. Accordingly, circular motion is here analysed in its depiction and actuation across several kinds of literary / literal machines, in reflection also on how sensory perception both mediate and is mediated. If literature is conditional upon a series of unique, though interconnected, mechanisms, it seems reasonable not to discard a certain circularity of the senses that is brought into play there and, indeed, given both thematic and formal substance in analog and digital works.

    A “hasty conclusion”, perhaps, as stated by Derrida, yet, one that was (and still is) able to cause an intense discussion among philosophers. In his questioning of touch, Derrida draws on Jean Luc Nancy’s philosophy of touch, particularly on the latter’s paradox of intangible tangibility, as a way to explore a slightly different meaning of the verb haptein (to be able to touch, to grab, to attach, to fasten), but also meaning “to hold back, to stop” (Nancy [2003]: 2008, 15).

  9. Exploring digital fiction as a tool for teenage body image bibliotherapy

    This article reflects on the findings of the interdisciplinary 'TransForm' project, which ran between 2012 and 2014 and aimed to explore how reading and writing digital fictions might support young women in developing frameworks for more positive thinking regarding their body image. The project comprised the following stages: (1) a review and compilation of digital fictions thematizing and/or problematizing female corporeality; (2) a series of cooperative inquiries with three groups of young women (aged 16-19 years) over a period of five weeks, examining participants’ responses to a selection of the previously compiled digital fictions, as well as the challenges these young women face in relation to body image; and (3) an interventionist summer school in which participants aged 16-19 explored body image issues via writing digital fictions. This article reports on the main observations and findings of each stage, and draws conclusions for future research needs in this area.
