  2. (S)PACING

    (S)PACING is a poetic performance piece that reflects upon the nervous habit of pacing and ideas of internal dialogue while walking as a source of poetic inspiration and contemplation, if not procrastination. The application for performance can either be played on the keyboard, or use live video motion tracking to access and combine screen-based still image, video, text, and audio content. The title of the piece refers not only to the act of pacing but also to pacing as a measure of time. The addition of the (s) at the beginning of the title, rendering the title spacing, could be said to refer not only to the locative and defamiliarizing spatial variations in the piece but also to formal aspects of poetry such as meter, feet, line breaks and stanzas. Though the performance, the actions of the performer may be fundamentally pedestrian they are put in contrast with mental and poetic machination in terms of the poetic output generated by the movement. In effect, the performer develops a system of, and has live action control over the scansion of the generated poem while handing over control of the vocalizations, imagery, and textual display to the application.

    The default display for this series of “THOught-poEMS” is a looped linear sequence of stanzas displayed in randomized fonts hovering in random positions over randomized video clips, while a cluster of words flock towards the pointer’s location on the text. Jhave provides the reader with control over several variables: videos, font, position, and gives him the ability to toggle, play, or pause the presence of text, video, flocking words, and sound.   4. Winter City Sleeps

    This video poem is reminiscent of Robert Frost’s “Tree at My Window” with its treatment of internal and external weather. The speaker of the poem is experiencing a metaphorical winter of the soul, exploring the idea poetically, visually, and musically (using “Hymn” by Moby). The scheduling of textual elements and their movement and duration onscreen focuses the reader’s attention on the idea expressed in each line, creating a sequence of ideas that change over time. This allows for turns, shifts, reversals, and re-imaginings, much like the layering of images used by Williams in “The Red Wheelbarrow,” but in time rather than in space.   5. Meditation on a Bar Stool

    This video poem is a meditation on breath, life, and death inspired by Buddha’s teachings, which may or may not have expired. The poem uses simple animations suggestive of the swelling of a chest as one draws breath, the thinness that comes from letting it out, and the burning of a cigarette. Aptly paced for the meditative contemplation of words, and lines, the poem begins with a quote from Buddha, emphasizing some of its language through animation and scheduling, and then presenting a response from the speaker, who sits at a bar stool, savoring some of the guilty pleasures life has to offer. As you read (and reread) this concise lyric poem, think of what it’s doing with certain binary opposites: exhale/inhale, life/death, outside/inside, and via negativa / via positiva.   6. 6-string Aria

    This brief video poem is delicately built from just a few simple elements: a guitar aria, five handwritten letters, simple animation, and a handful of words scheduled into the presentation. The poem explores different meanings one can arrive from the elements of the word aria, such as air and area. As the letters move and rotate around a common axis, they delineate a space for different readings, as well as the implied space of a relationship in trouble. The gentle reconfiguration of the two hand-drawn “I”s into two mathematical symbols suggest a resolution to the conflict implied by the text, particularly when juxtaposed with the final clustering of the letters.

  7. Whispering

    This video poem delivers lines of poetry in a sequence that emphasizes lines and words through kinetic language and precise timing to unnerve the reader. From the outset, it begins to set its creepy tone through as short looping soundtrack that provides a metronomic quality to the poem, which unfolds line by line drawing attention to certain words by flashing snippets of almost recognizable images and words. Its visual design uses oranges and reds to contrast with a blue window-like rectangle that changes position slightly over the course of the poem. The train-like sound reinforces a sense that the reader is on rails, leading to an inevitable, chilling conclusion as the poem’s imagery unfolds and the reader realizes where this is leading its readers.

  8. Family of silence

    "Family of silence" is the portrait of a Cambodian family, a couple and their daughter, exiled in France before the Civil War and the takeover of the Khmer Rouge the country in 1975. This film is a portrait of the daily life of this family of memory which emerges the deaf the buried memory of the war, exile, the painful feeling of being surviving when other members of the family disappeared.

    his award-winning Web documentary about a short-lived mining town in Canada made the 2011 New Media Writing Award shortlist. A masterful, lovingly produced piece is challenging to categorize in terms of genre: is it a video (its interactivity and born-digital ontology make it difficult to label as “film”), memoir, narrative, poem, or an artistic website? As a multimedia work (using audio, video, text, images) that requires multimodal engagement (reading, listening, viewing, interaction) from its audience, it is fittingly multi-generic.   10. Paper Wounds

    “Paperwounds,” is an intimate look into the sometimes-surreal, often-manic realm of the suicidal and depressed. It is an intense snapshot of the numerous facets that go into the decision of taking one’s own life, each of its disparate parts aligning to form a piecemeal narrative readers may only ever really guess at in its entirety. Presented as a crumpled up piece of paper, readers “unwrap” the suicide note by clicking on the highlighted/pulsating words within its folds. Doing so exhumes other, shorter notes the writer placed within the virtual letter, each one a different illustration of–perhaps–what drove the fictional victim to this ultimate negation of self. The interface, technological sounds, and brief animations when you mouse over certain texts combined with the ruined state of the materials create a forensic tone for the work, casting the reader in the role of an investigator. The poem may be zoomed in on, zoomed out from, flipped, rotated, dimmed, and made completely invisible–though doing any of the aforementioned does not seem to change the nature of the text at first glance.
