    Description taken from N. Katherine Hayles, Electronic Literature: "David Knoebel's exquisitely choreographed 'Heart Pole,' from his collection 'Click Poetry,' features a circular globe of words, with two rings spinning at 90 degrees from one another, 'moment to moment' and 'mind absorbing.' A longer narrative sequence, imaged as a plane undulating in space, can be manipulated by clicking and dragging. The narrative, focalized through the memories of a third-person male persona, recalls the moment between waking and sleeping when the narrator's mother is singing him to sleep with a song composed of his day's activities. But like the slippery plane that shifts in and out of legibility as it twists and turns, this moment of intimacy is irrevocably lost to time, forming the 'heart pole' that registers both its evocation and the on-goingness that condemns even the most deeply seated experiences to loss" (11).

  2. Grafik Dynamo

    Grafik Dynamo is a net art work by Kate Armstrong & Michael Tippett that loads live images from the internet into a live action comic strip. From the time of its launch in 2005 to the end of 2008, the work used a live feed from social networking site LiveJournal. The work is currently using a feed from Flickr. The images are accompanied by narrative fragments that are dynamically loaded into speech and thought bubbles and randomly displayed. Animating the comic strip using dynamic web content opens up the genre in a new way: Together, the images and narrative serve to create a strange, dislocated notion of sense and expectation in the reader, as they are sometimes at odds with each other, sometimes perfectly in sync, and always moving and changing. The work takes an experimental approach to open ended narrative, positing a new hybrid between the flow of data animating the work and the formal perameter that comprises its structure.

  3. Saving the Alphabet

    This subtly haunting poem tells the story of how each letter from the alphabet disappeared, or was made to disappear, by corporations obeying a secret agenda. The conspiracy theory overtones are underscored by the use of sound, a short loop of metallic whispering wind or water and a handful of soft musical notes. Clicking on each letter on the left hand column will take you to the corresponding letter and narrative of its disappearance, with the large letter disappearing as you read the accompanying text, but it also starts a slower, almost imperceptible, fading process of those letters in the entire work. If you click through quickly and read the whole poem you may not even notice, but step away for a minute and you’ll find that the letters you have read have disappeared from all the language in the poem and the result may be challenging to read (see image below). This more than anything provides a visceral impact, as we try to read a barely functional language mutilated by loss of letters.

  4. Le Rabot poète

    Le rabot-poète appartient à la série des « petits poèmes à lecture inconfortable ». Le lecteur doit en permanence déplacer la souris d’avant en arrière s’il veut  « raboter » l’aplat qui se reforme continuellement et ainsi accéder à la lecture de l’animation qui se déroule sous ce dernier. Qui, du texte ou du lecteur, contrôle l’autre ? Le ridicule ou le jeu ne l’emportent-ils pas sur le littéraire ? Que lit-on quand le zapping et l’action sont ainsi forcés ? Mais finalement, raboter la couleur de l’eau pour revenir sur l’eau dans l’animation, n’est-ce pas tout simplement réaliser une figure de rhétorique dont le lecteur est l’instrument ? Alors : immersion dans le texte ou, au contraire, le texte s’immerge-t-il jusque dans le lecteur ?

    Poésie du dispositif, de la relation plus que de l’écrit ; un texte à voir et à lire qui n’est plus pensé ni comme un ensemble de mots, ni en termes d’image.

    Désir Insuffisant est une œuvre inédite et non consultable. Créée à une date indéterminée, elle possède néanmoins un auteur en la personne de Philippe Bootz. Il s’agit même de sa première œuvre Web. Bien que non consultable, l’œuvre est d’un accès facile. Je me propose ici de vous donner les quelques réflexions qu’elle m’a suscitées.

  7. petite brosse à dépoussiérer la fiction

    petite brosse à dépoussiérer la fiction" (small brush to dust off fiction) is a generative piece written in French. A scene of thriller is generated at each time you run the program or ask for a new scene. This scene explores different possibilities of a scenario. But the reader must continually "dust" a picture that covers the text while reading. The text is a pastiche: the scene is located at a time in a single location. Some features happen out of this room, they are computed by  the program but not expressed into the narrative. The piece begins with some "adapted" poems by Jean de La Fontaine.

  8. Vespers

    Vespers is an interactive fiction game written in 2005 by Jason Devlin that placed first at the 2005 Interactive Fiction Competition. It also won the XYZZY Awards for Best Game, Best NPCs, Best Setting, and Best Writing. Set in a 15th century Italian monastery, it is chiefly a horror-themed morality game, where the player takes moral decisions, which then affect the ending. However, whilst playing the game, it isn't obvious that these are moral dilemmas, and the game actively encourages the player to take the evil path.

    "Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy is the 18th century’s answer to Douglas Adams — irreverent, funny, and surprisingly hypertextual. Shandean Ambles (drafted at the Shandy Hall under Sterne’s imposing nose) parodies this work of nine volumes in nine short steps. [It] explore[s] indecent ghosts and sexual harrassment, quills and LCD screens, marbled papers and marble halls where the sauce and the plot never thicken" (ELO).
