    A short essay about the digital future of books that focuses primarily on various e-book formats, constrating the failures of early experiments by publishers such as Voyager Expanded Books with more recent digital-publishing trends -- such as Touch Press's app version of T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland and meta-analytic tools, such as Amazon's X-Ray, which is bundled with the Kindle Touch -- that suggest the promose of expanded e-books. Electronic literature, in this narrative, receives only cursory attention. After noting that the "electronic literary vanguard tends to dislike e-books because they are too much like real books," Moor provides a brief account of electronic literature that, regretably, equates the field almost exclusively with the hypertextualists who built and wrote using StorySpace. While Moor is aware that a multiplicity of e-literary forms exist, he neglects to describe the "dreamy new places" that author-programmers have subsequently built.

  4. Marking Transition: the Work of Neal von Flue

    For any regular Internet user, the hyperlink has become ubiquitous, almost rendered invisible
    through the frequency of its use. Trails in hypertext are meticulously laid out through the
    seemingly endless streams of data, connected by links imagined as points of intersection in the
    web. Links are used for reference, for navigation but also extensively in creative production, to
    fashion hypertextual narratives and images. It is in this realm of electronic literature, both visual
    and textual, that the function of the link shifts from the commonplace to a carrier of aesthetic
    potential.

    This presentation examines the aesthetic activation of the hyperlink as both an indicator of
    transition and site of transformation. It is a brief exploration of the hyperlink as a signifier, a
    mark both on and in the 'surface' of the digital text, through a close case study of two works by
    hypercomic creator Neal von Flue.

  5. Shakespeare in Simlish? Responsive Systems and Literary Language

    There is a moment that can happen when reading/playing an interactive fiction. The system just presented some text, perhaps quite engaging or even beautiful. And then one tries to reply, using some of the same language, only to receive an error. The underlying system doesn't can't hear the language with which it speaks. The language it displays is written ahead of time, while the language it receives must be parsed and acted upon at runtime.

    There is something uneasy about this disjuncture, and one response is to try to avoid all such problems. Will Wright's Sims speak only in gibberish sounds and visual icons, so that the surface representation of language matches the very simple internal representation of what they can discuss. Chris Crawford currently plans for his new storytelling system to avoid the construction of English-like sentences found in Storytron — instead moving to an icon language intended to help players better understand the internal representations (much more complex than those in The Sims) on which his story system will operate.

    This article traces the history of Storyspace, the world’s first program for creating, editing and reading hypertext fiction. Storyspace is crucial to the history of hypertext as well as the history of interactive fiction. It argues that Storyspace was built around a topographic metaphor and that it attempts to model human associative memory. The article is based on interviews with key hypertext pioneers as well as documents created at the time.

  7. Hypertext and Ethnographic Representation: A Case Study

    This study explores the ways in which ethnographic data might be represented within a hypertext format. It begins with an analysis of the historical roots of the technology to determine key characteristics that differentiate it from other media. Three characteristics surface through this analysis: multilinearity, multivocality, and multimodality. The current study examines these characteristics from a more critical stance to determine what is possible in practice. To this end, three ethnographic hypertexts are analyzed to determine strengths and weaknesses. From this analysis, a set of design implications emerge that provides a framework for a case study entitled The Congo Prototype . The Congo Prototype is built from an extensive study of a museum located in Belgium, The Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA), along with interviews with colonial veterans who served in the Congo up until Independence. This work offers the reader specific techniques that might be incorporated into future works, and at the same time, provides a stand alone ethnographic study of numerous narratives revolving around the Belgian Congo.

  8. Writing at the Limit: The Novel in the New Media Ecology

    While some cultural critics are pronouncing the death of the novel, a whole generation of novelists have turned to other media with curiosity rather than fear. These novelists are not simply incorporating references to other media into their work for the sake of verisimilitude, they are also engaging precisely such media as a way of talking about what it means to write and read narrative in a society filled with stories told outside the print medium. By examining how some of our best fiction writers have taken up the challenge of film, television, video games, and hypertext, Daniel Punday offers an enlightening look into the current status of such fundamental narrative concepts as character, plot, and setting. He considers well-known postmodernists like Thomas Pynchon and Robert Coover, more-accessible authors like Maxine Hong Kingston and Oscar Hijuelos, and unjustly overlooked writers like Susan Daitch and Kenneth Gangemi, and asks how their works investigate the nature and limits of print as a medium for storytelling.

  9. Exploiting Hypertext’s Potential for Teaching Gender Studies

    The aim of this article is to show what feminist electronic literature can contribute to the study of gender theories and feminist literature. The study of feminist hypertext fictions and the use of hypertext as a teaching tool are facilitated by the intrinsic characteristics of the electronic medium, complementing the electronic medium and providing alternative possibilities in the learning process: collaborative authorship, multivocality, textual openness, non-hierarchical and rhizomatic structures, neo-kathartic effects and open publishing. Teaching feminist electronic literature using the hypertext offers the possibility of updating and discussing gender through a medium that permits rearranging the hypertext, better organized analyses of intertextuality and fostering the study through association and connections, which is the way the human brain works. The teaching method proposed pursues the objective of studying narratives about gender taking advantage of the new technologies without losing dialogues in class as intuitive learning process.

  10. Re-construyendo la novela para un nuevo milenio. Postestructuralismo, discurso, lectura, autoría e hipertextualidad ante los nuevos caminos de la novela

    El postestructuralismo como conjunto de ideas teóricas de pensamiento ha forjado algunas creaciones novelísticas a lo largo de los últimos cuarenta años de tal forma que la novela en su conjunto, si bien paso a paso, está modificando su anterior estructura lineal, aunque el cambio no se haya generalizado aún, salvo en la literatura hipertextual propiamente dicha, gracias a la difusión y experimentación de las nuevas tecnologías. Me gustaría repasar la importancia que algunos de los principios del postestructuralismo han tenido sobre la estructura de tres novelas diferentes de autores, países, literaturas y décadas distintas, como ejemplos clave de una evolución.
