  1. The Digital Poem against the Interface Free

    Recent e-literature by Judd Morrissey and Jason Nelson represents a broad movement in e-literature to draw attention to the move toward the so-called “interface free” – or, the interface that seeks to disappear altogether by becoming as “natural” as possible. It is against this troubling attempt to mask the workings of the interface and how it delimits creative production that Judd Morrissey creates “The Jew’s Daughter” – a work in which readers are invited to click on hyperlinks in the narrative text, links which do not lead anywhere so much as they unpredictably change some portion of the text. Likewise working against the clean and transparent interface of the Web, in “game, game, game and again game,” Jason Nelson’s hybrid poem-videogame self-consciously embraces a hand-drawn, hand-written interface while deliberately undoing videogame conventions through nonsensical mechanisms that ensure players never advance past level 121/2. As such, both Morrissey and Nelson intentionally incorporate interfaces that thwart readers’ access to the text so that they are forced to see how such interfaces are not natural so much as they define what and how we read and write.

    As poets continue to use digital media technology, functionalities of computing extend aesthetic possibilities in documents focusing attention on crafting verbal content. Utility of these machines and tools enables multiple types of compounded articulation (combinations of verbal, visual, animated, and interactive elements). Building larger public awareness of the mechanics of digital poetry, New Directions in Digital Poetry aspires to influence the formation of writing with media in literary society of the future, specifically as a record of a particular technological era.

  5. Adventures in Transition: Jason Nelson’s Scary Journey from Flash to J-Code and Desk to Hand

    Perhaps the most disturbing and exciting periods of a digital poet’s creative practice is the transitional period between using one technology and learning another. For the past eight years I’ve been predominately a user of Adobe Flash. I say user, because in many ways
    the software is a drug, carving response and reward pathways into the cranium fibers. My creations have been the beneficiary of a tool ideal for multi-layered/dimensional and interactive artworks viewable on all major platforms. However, it is this platform issue and Adobe’s losing
    position in its battle with the Tyrant Apple that is quickly making Flash obsolete, unplayable in the fastest growing segment of electronic devices, tablets and phones. This very well might turn around and Flash might save itself. But suffice it to say, the net/portable creative ndustries have left Flash to fend for itself.

  7. Oltre i confini del libro. La letteratura italiana nell'era digitale

    Beyond the boundaries of the book. The Italian literature in the digital age is the master thesis of Daniele Giampà, a student of Italian and Spanish philology at the university of Zurich. The analysis of the Italian digital literature is articulated in three main parts: history of the electronic literature, predecessors of electronic literature and the analysis of works of Italian digital literature written between 1997-2012. The selection of the works is based on a taxonomy elaborate in the introduction of the thesis.

    The central arguments of the thesis are the creation of an analytical instrument for the digital context, that is the matrix composed of the dimension of narratology and the dimension of informatics, the demonstration of the analogies between print literature and electronic/digital literature and the innovations brought by new media to literature.

  8. Poetic Machines: an investigation into the impact of the characteristics of the digital apparatus on poetic expression

    This thesis aims to investigate digital methods of signification in order to examine the impact of the apparatus on poetic expression. This is done through a critical analysis of the translation process from analogue to digital, in the sense that even as we read a page we are in fact translating sight into sound. The resulting effects of this change in form are explored in order to understand their impact on meaning-making in the digital realm. Through this interrogation the comprehension and definition of ePoetry (electronic poetry or digital poetry) is extended, by exposing the unique affordances and specificities of digital expression. Digital poetry theorists such as Loss Pequeño Glazier posit that the emerging field of electronic literature is composed of interweaving strands from the areas of computer science, sociology, and literary studies. This is reflected in the interdisciplinary nature of this thesis, which necessitates an engagement with the broad areas of translation, literature, and digital media studies.

  9. Next Generation Literary Machines: The “Dynamic Network Aesthetic” of Contemporary Poetry Generators

    This dissertation investigates the current state of digital poetry generators. The study argues that today’s poetry programs embody a new stage distinct from second- generation digital literature. The new stage projects a “dynamic network aesthetic,” reflective of four trends in Web 2.0 cultural production: the potential for mass aggregation; the adoption of participatory platforms; the instability of textual material; and the unpredictability of individual actors. The chapters interrogate the ways in which the four characteristics emerge in three categories of poetry generators: programs that manipulate user input; programs that manipulate Internet text; and programs that generate autonomous content. Corresponding with the three categories, three theorists of the machine inform the discussion. Donna Haraway, Jean Baudrillard, and Gilles Deleuze each provide apt approaches to twenty-first-century technology. However, each theorist also demonstrates the ways in which recent models of the machine do not yet fully account for the “dynamic network aesthetic” of the Internet era.
