  1. The Presumed Literariness of Digital

    This presentation will challenge the current, too quickly determined relationship between
    the ‘literary’ and digital media. The presumed literariness of digital art--these days, anything
    from performance art to virtual sculpture work--muddles the already confused and meandering
    genre of electronic literature, leading away from acts of reading and remarking on text and its location in new media. Electronic literature began as a study of literary writing produced and
    meant to be read on a computer screen, opening up new possibilities for interactive and dynamic
    storytelling, utilizing the new medium’s ability for linking lexias. The literariness of this work
    is manifest: the work was primarily textual, the centrality of reading paramount. Textuality was
    at the heart of the work, thus the term electronic literature was appropriate and uncontested.
    Lately, ‘electronic literature’ is an umbrella-term for all things digital. A spectrum of genres
    and forms are included, among them video games, interactive fiction, digital art, and (virtual)

  2. Of People Not Machines: Authorship, Copyright and the Computer Programmer

    Authorship of computer programs merits close attention, on one level, because it illustrates what is one of my more general observations about the relationship between ideas of authorship in law and the "digital arts": its complexity. The sphere of "digital arts" is characterised by a multiplicity of creative practices and consequently a diversity of ideas about “authorship”, which resist simplistic conclusions as to what the challenge of the digital should mean for law. At the same time, the status of computer programmers as authors draws attention to what for modern lawyers is likely to be an unexpected and counter-intuitive observation about certain aspects of the relation between digital art and law: far from always a source of challenge, the discourses of authorship in the "digital arts" can also provide the law with assistance. Indeed, as we will see, in humanising technology and exalting the computer programmer as a creative poet, certain discourses of digital art can in fact provide coherence and legitimacy to legal concepts of authorship, rather than challenging them.

  4. Anti-Spam: Reinventing Data

    Today, where information is continually transferred in the form of data, the word “information” has all but been exchanged for the word “data.” This shift of terms has aided in effectively transforming the world into a network-world of data. In many areas, and for many professionals, condensing information has become an almost exclusive preoccupation. This need to condense information through selecting and summarizing events—via the use of statistics, infography, visualization software, reports, databases, and animations—has dominated our mental landscape; it dominates the way we structure our perception of reality. Therefore, it is important to rethink what this phenomenon represents and how artists are responding to it. In this network-world of data, spam (which is unsolicited e-mail or electronic data sent en mass) has become one of the symbols representing the flux of disinformation, and/or unsolicited, information. Anti-spam is, therefore, a method of eliminating and screening the source data, a tool I call impedance.   5. The Transducer Function: An Introduction to a Theoretical Typology in Electronic Literature and Digital Art

    In this essay I introduce the notion of transducer function in the fields of electronic literature and digital art. Firstly, I survey the transduction concept throughout its history in such domains as physics, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, physiology, psychology, philosophy, logic and computer science. Secondly, I discuss the relevance of a transduction theory versus the advantage of a transducer function. I migrate the transduction concept into the fields of electronic literature and digital art, showcasing the contexts of application, and several transfer processes and functions. Finally, I apply the transducer function as a theoretical typology and a recognizable system, highlighting some artworks by R. Luke DuBois, André Sier and Scott Rettberg that can be read within this framework. Thus, it means taking into account a set of transfer and conversion processes: information, patterns and data among mechanisms, technologies, themes, creative and theoretical guidelines. In this sense, I develop a critical framework that operates as a method for analyzing and comprehend further digital artworks.

  6. Make or Break? Concerning the Value of Redundancy as a Creative Strategy

    There is a contradiction at the heart of digital art making, regarding its temporal mediality and relationship with a mainstream visual arts practice that values permanence. Why do we wish to preserve something temporal and fleeting? Will the preservation of digital works contribute to a process of commodification that many media artists have sought to avoid by embracing the ephemeral nature of digital media? Are there reasons that would justify preserving digital works of art when, for some artists, redundancy is a key principle in their practice?
