4. DIY: reinvent the world by reinventing the language (Interview with Florian Cramer)

   Florian Cramer's thought is justly (in)famous. From early provocative studies of combinatorial language's roots in antiquity and alchemy ("Words Made Flesh"), Cramer has segued into a concern with DIY culture.

   For Cramer, DIY is the natural extension of utopian renegades, social and cultural outliers whose play was not formal but utopian.

   Any renovation of language constitutes a renovation of cognition and subsequently culture itself; even as the possibility for everyone to publish through networked media questions the notion of the literary. Furthermore, 4chan image memes are digital poems, language transformed through practice with the aim of transforming practice.

5. Cibertextualidades 5

   The impact of hypertext and hypermedia on scholarly editing of our literary legacy, which is increasingly published in electronic formats, has fostered a conceptual shift from the archive as a classified hierarchical collection of texts to the archive as a decentred and reconfigurable network of texts. Another important set of questions concerns new methods for editing and organizing multimodal textualities resulting from combinations of materials and media (graphic, audio, video, digital). The convergent multimodality of digital textuality opens up a new editing and archival space for multimedia and intermedia forms of writing. In the current technological context, innovative and experimental literary forms become relevant, as many of the operations that the machine provides can be found in previous literary practices: from collages and automatic writing to narrative permutations and intermedia poetry. This issue of the journal addresses problems of representing, archiving, and publishing experimental literary forms in digital spaces.

7. Alire: A Relentless Literary Investigation (Digithum)

   This article was written by Philippe Bootz for the 10th anniversary of the launch of the magazine Alire, one of the longest-standing multimedia journals in Europe and the publishing platform of the LAIRE group, specialising in researching the creative possibilities of new computer technologies. Alire has become, over the years, a landmark in any discussion of digital poetry, as it has enabled us to know numerous works of poetry written and designed to be read on a computer. The position Bootz takes in the article is that digital literature is literature, too. The Alire experience thus shows us that we can conceive a literature that is closely linked to the characteristics of the computer.

   Cet article a été écrit par Philippe Bootz à l'occasion du 10e anniversaire de la création de la revue Alire, une revue multimédia parmi les plus anciennes d'Europe et un moyen de diffusion du groupe L.A.I.R.E qui se consacre à la recherche des possibilités créatives des nouvelles technologies informatiques. Alire est devenu, au cours de ces années, un ouvrage de référence indispensable en ce qui concerne la poésie électronique puisqu'il nous a permis de découvrir de nombreuses oeuvres poétiques écrites destinées à être lues sur ordinateur. Dans ce texte, Bootz soutient que la littérature informatique est aussi de la littérature. L'expérience d'Alire nous prouve donc qu'il est possible de concevoir une littérature intimement liée aux particularités de l'ordinateur.

9. In the Absence of the Publisher's Peritext

   To Genette, the basic “nature of the paratext” is functional (7). In his theoretical account, he
   presents a number of paratextual units (title, dedications, epigraphs etc.) and proofs its functionality through the analysis of respective examples. At the same time, he alerts that
   paratexts may be unproductive and notes: “from the fact that the paratext always fulfills a
   function, it does not necessarily follow that the paratext always fulfills its function well” (409).
   That said, paratexts may be dysfunctional in that a paratext does not meet the function Genette
   originally envisioned. A paratext is also dysfunctional if it is absent where it’d be expected: based
   and bound to the materiality of the book-as-object, Genette has developed a map to locate the
   types of paratexts he designates. As per Genette, a preface supposedly precedes a work and an
   epigraph shouldn’t intervene a body’s text. Likewise, the publisher’s peritext spans around and
   within the body of a work, while the epitext is located outside of a work’s material body. A paratext’s location thus defines its function.
