  6. What Is at Work in a Work of Digital Literature?

    This proposal is for a panel presentation. In keeping with the themes of Archive and Innovate, this panel will look at structures and decoding with respect to the practice of preserving electronic fiction and poetry. A finished electronic piece is the end result of various decisions about technology and the coding that accompanies this production. In some cases the reading of a piece partially decodes the assemblage; in other works, the coding structure remains hidden. The members of this panel will look at both phenomena as an aspect of investigating works of digital literature. Members will include Marjorie C. Luesebrink/M.D. Coverley (chair), Stephanie Strickland, John Zuern, and Mark Marino.

  7. Communities/Commons: A Snap Line of Digital Practice

    “Communities/Commons: A Snap Line of Digital Practice” presents a brief history of digital poetry, from the perspective of the Electronic Poetry Center (EPC), Buffalo, and the international E-Poetry Festivals of digital literature, art, and performance (E-Poetry). The paper engages the discipline from various perspectives, considering its relation to historic contextualizing movements and institutional mechanisms. Determining a renewed vision of E-Poetry community, it is argued, are its exuberant origins: (1) the U.S. small press movements of the later Twentieth century; (2) the activities and philosophies of the Electronic Poetry Center; (3) its self-definition as more broadly-conceived than that of any specific category of digital literature; (4) the pre-existing literary ground of Black Mountain, Language Poetry, and related practices; (5) the vibrancy of the as-then-constituted Poetics Program at Buffalo, and; (6) a “symposium of the whole”, the continued emerging importance of enthnopoetic localizations to an eventual realization of contemporary poetics. Finally, a call is made for the field being adaptable and more generous with its frames of reference.

  8. Art et pédagogie - génétique du projet en poésie numérique

    C'est une chose bien étrange que d'aspirer à enseigner l'art. Notons qu'il s'agit toujours de l'art de quelque chose. On ne fait le plus souvent et plus modestement que l'enseignement de pratiques susceptibles d'amener au travail artistique.

    On tente au mieux de créer les conditions pour que le moment et le geste créatif advienne, qu'on le reconnaisse et s'en saisisse personnellement, dans la meilleure conscience possible de l'histoire de cette pratique. Mais chacun sait que l'on cumule les difficultés lorsqu'on se met à prétendre le faire à partir de son travail personnel.

  9. E-CyberDigital Poetry: To Grasp or to Build a Genre Identity through a Term’s Choice?

    In recent years, the field of digital poetry had at least three major critical monographs
    discussing the genre and its state-of-the-art. Loss Pequeño Glazier (2002), Brian Kim
    Stefans (2003) and Christopher T. Funkhouser (2007) have not only introduced new
    critical perspectives, but have also discussed the genre’s problematic definition and its
    denominations’ variety: e-poetry, cyberpoetry and digital poetry.
    Considering Theo Lutz’s Stochastische Texte (1959) as the first work of
    programmable poetry, one should note the genre’s long history of practice in spite of
    its shorter history of critical writing. Therefore, the way authors have been coining
    and defining the genre itself claims for a theorization standpoint and helps shaping the
    field towards a specific path and perhaps a crystalized historical construction.
    Do the referenced terms position their authors in a similar flow of thought? By
    following a concept’s trajectory and the author’s choice, one must consider the fact
    that its crystallization will shape future critical writing. In this sense, it is important to
