  3. Building the Infrastructural Layer: Reading Data Visualization in the Digital Humanities

    Information visualization is a technique for organizing, representing, and interpreting information visually. Information visualizations can take the form of hand-drawn diagrams, popular “infographics,” or interactive, computer-based visualizations. We see examples of information visualizations produced and displayed in myriad contexts, including: the scientific modeling of the Higgs boson particle, the NY Times 2012 presidential election coverage, the popular infographics exhibited at Visual.ly, corporate PowerPoint presentations, public web galleries like Nathan Yau’s Flowing Data or Manuel Lima’s Visual Complexity, Google’s Ngram Viewer, and finally, in humanities research and pedagogy. Examples in the digital humanities include the Stanford Literary Lab’s use of the Gephi visualization platform to map its own academic community, the Software Studies Initiative’s visualization of thousands of cultural media objects like magazines, manga pages, and paintings, as well as Alan Liu’s Research-oriented Social Environment (RoSE) project that incorporates visualization tools directly into the research process.

  4. Mining the Knowledge Base: Exploring Methodologies for Analysing the Field of Electronic Literature

    This is a work-in-progress report from an exploration of the intersection between the fairly conventional digital humanities method of creating a database - specifically, the ELMCIP Electronic Literature Knowledge Base (http://elmcip.net/knowledgebase) and the digital methods strategy of directly analysing online, digital content. We are testing out different methods of analysing data about conference series harvested from the Knowledge Base, using social network analysis to visualise the connections between people, events and works and tag analysis.

  6. Interview with Dene Grigar

    In this interview Dene Grigar tells about her approach to electronic literature in the early 1990s and about her work as curator for the exhibit "Electronic Literature and Its Emerging Forms" in 2015. She goes on describing some distinguishing features of electronic literature and explaining her 'conceptual shift' on regard to the way of working with computers. Finally she suggests some methods of analysis for the understanding of electronic literature for both academic scholars and mainstream audience.

  7. The Idiocy of the Digital Literary (and what does it have to do with digital humanities)?

    What does the category of the literary give to digital humanities? Nothing and everything. This essay considers the "idiocy" of the literary: its unaccountable singularity, which guarantees that we continue to return to it as a source, inspiration, and challenge. As a consequence, digital humanities is inspired and irritated by the literary.

    My essay shows this in three ways. First, through a speculative exploration of the relation between digital humanities and the category of "the literary." Second, through a quick survey of the use of literature in digital humanities project. Thirdly, through a specific examination of TEI and character rendering as digital humanities concerns that necessarily engage with the literary. Once again, the literary remains singular and not abstract, literal in a way that challenges and provokes us towards new digital humanities work.

  8. The .txtual Condition: Digital Humanities, Born-Digital Archives, and the Future Literary

    In 1995 in the midst of the first widespread wave of digitization, the Modern Language Association issued a Statement on the Significance of Primary Records in order to assert the importance of retaining books and other physical artifacts even after they have been microfilmed or scanned for general consumption. "A primary record," the MLA told us then, "can appropriately be defined as a physical object produced or used at the particular past time that one is concerned with in a given instance" (27). Today, the conceit of a "primary record" can no longer be assumed to be coterminous with that of a "physical object." Electronic texts, files, feeds, and transmissions of all sorts are also now, indisputably, primary records. In the specific domain of the literary, a writer working today will not and cannot be studied in the future in the same way as writers of the past, because the basic material evidence of their authorial activity — manuscripts and drafts, working notes, correspondence, journals — is, like all textual production, increasingly migrating to the electronic realm.

Said to possess both a “dark side” and a utopian core, it is humanities plus media. Humanities in media – but have the humanities ever existed outside a medium of inscription?
