  4. ELiterature Formalization and Pedagogical Implications

    This paper deals with the eLiterature formalization and its pedagogical implications. Firstly, it considers the pressing need of an official formalization of Electronic Literature. Secondly, it provides a proposal for the appropriate pedagogical theory and methodologies necessary to take advantage of the possibilities offered by New Media Writing in educational contexts. Finally, it offers some examples of possible pedagogical practices which adopt Digital Literature.

  5. Generating Books: Paradoxical Print Snapshots of Digital Literary Processes

    Since the advent of the internet, advocates and critics alike have heralded the end of the book. George P. Landow observed that hypertextuality and poststructuralism emerged at the same moment, both due to dissatisfaction with the printed book and hierarchal thought. Derrida argued the question of writing could only be opened if the book was closed. Consider, then, the paradoxical position of Vienna-based publishers TRAUMAWIEN. Recognizing that although the vast majority of the text produced by computer systems – protocols, listings, error logs, binary codes – is never seen or read by those who consume it, this text is internal to our daily thoughts and actions and is thus literary. TRAUMAWIEN conceives of the print books it publishes as snapshots of computer generated literary processes which would otherwise be disappearing as soon as they are written. This paper will discuss the iterative processes by which I generated one such book published by TRAUMAWIEN in 2010.

  6. BLOGS REMEDIATION TRANSMEDIALITY FROM DIGITAL TO PAPER TO EBOOK

    Through the analysis of three case-studies, I investigate what happens to blogs when they are transposed outside the web, in media such as printed books or ebooks. Starting from Walker-Rettberg's definition of blog (2008), three orders of change are identified: blog's life and function; author's life and role; blog's structure and content. These three levels open the discussion to gender and genre issues with reference to digital texts and to the possibility that, far from sealing the death of the author or the onnipotence of the reader, the web opens texts to emancipation.

  7. Digital Literature: Theoretical and Aesthetic Reflections

    The emergence of a new phenomenon – digital literature – within the field of
    literary studies calls for the reorganization and creation of new theoretical and
    analytical repertoires. As models of communication change, so do
    reception and production processes accompanying these changes. Within these
    altered scenarios, the dissertation Digital Literature: Theoretical and Aesthetic
    Reflections is a response to the aesthetic and theoretical challenges brought on by
    computer-based literature. As a methodological strategy, the dissertation articulates
    recent trends in the theory of digital aesthetics – remediation (BOLTER),
    eventilization (HAYLES), correlations of performativity, intermediality and
    interactivity with meaning-driven analysis (SIMANOWSKI), Medienumbrüche
    (GENDOLLA & SCHÄFER) – with theories of production of presence
    (GUMBRECHT), autopoietic communicative models (LUHMANN) and closereadings
    of digital works. By scripting a dialogue with key theorists from print
    literary theory as well as new media theorists and artists in the burgeoning field,
