    >>oh<< is a “concrete cyberpoem, an interactive audio-visual by Reiner Strasser. It is based on a visual poem by Dan Waber, created on a short poem by Jennifer Hill-Kaucher” (“>>oh<<'s website”). Gray dots simulating the effect of rain fall on the page and by passing over them with the pointer an audible “Oh” sound is triggered and a ripple effect extends out from it, briefly illuminating the background text of the poem. The uncovered text and the voiced “Ohs” differ between dots and when one has moused over each one a blue dot appears. When clicked, like a fresh rainfall it washes the entirety of the poem's background text into view.

    Mapping is an interactive web-based text that addresses location, geographically, psychologically,
    and corporeally. By mousing through the text and exploring various options, users reveal layers, edit
    structure, and help create a unique piece with each iteration. Mapping was designed to be run in a
    browser and was created using HTML and JavaScript.

  3. P.o.E.M.M.

    A compilation of broken poems, P.o.E.M.M. Poems for Excitable [Mobile] Media is designed explicitly for mobile media. The poems cannot be read without touching the screen, an experience that creates excitable stimulation. The letters and words of the poems float in the background, waiting for the user to snatch them up with their fingers. One line at a time, the user can grab the words and align them on the screen. The lines can be arranged in any order, and so the user must piece together both their meaning and the structure. Lewis and Nadeau built the interface filled by these works and poets: “What They Speak When They Speak to Me” by Jason E. Lewis, “Character” by Jim Andrews, “Let Me Tell You What Happened This Week” by David Jhave Johnston, “Muddy Mouth” by JR Carpenter, “The Color of Your Hair Is Dangerous” by Aya Karpinska.   4. A Fine View

    Part of the “Words in Space” series, this deceptively simple poem uses VRML to provide us with a first person point of view of this poem. The lack of control as we fall past the lines, reading them as we go at an accelerating pace, helps us identify with Bill, a roofer “who lost / his footing in the dew / slick plywood.” In this virtual environment, the letters, words and lines gain an architectural physicality that reinforces the poem’s setting. Soft music in the background of this poem sets a sad tone for a situation full of gravitas.

  5. Walkdont

    Part of his “Words in Space” series, this poem uses VRML to position two dimensional words in different three dimensional rotational axes and provides a minimalist interface for the reader to switch between two types of rotation or movement, signaling the change with an audible click.

    The spiraling of the words around a central axis and around each other mimic the speaker’s thought process as he obsesses over what seems to have been a traumatic incident. If we extend the idea of word rotation to its static title, we could read it as “walkdont,” as “dontwalk,” or over time as “walkdontwalkdontwalkdontwalkdont” an idea reinforced by the use of color in three key words and phrases punctuated by the blue “Who knew?”

  6. Euclid

    This VRML piece is a meditation on Euclidean geometry, matter, mortality, eternity and language in all of these contexts. It consists of two spaces, the first of which we experience as a movie that displays four stanzas, each of which expresses Euclidean elements: solid, plane, line, point. The next space is intriguing because it has the four words above, plus two more words, all surrounding a cube made of clusters of 2-3 letters. Navigate this space when the initial movie ends, seeing the different views, and you’ll get the point of what Knoebel is trying to express with this minimalist poem in a virtual environment.

    Note: To be able to read this work, you’ll need a VRML client (Recommendations: PC: Cortona 3D Viewer, Mac & Linux: OpenVRML). Be patient: you aren’t able to explore from the outset, only after you’ve seen the views. Right click on the window for a menu of options.

    The Living Liberia Fabric, initiated in affiliation with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Liberia, is an interactive, web-based narrative supporting the goal of lasting peace after years of civil war (1979-2003). It links concerns for liberation, dignity, and the future with needs for cultural foundations, human rights, truth, and reconciliation. Our system is based in Liberia's culture and the specifics of the conflicts, hence representing our cultural computing perspective.   8. Signal to Noise

    "Signal to Noise" is a web-native hypertext designed for concurrent navigations by multiple readers, whose interactions with the text subtly influence one another's parallel readings in realtime. 

    Artist Statement:

    "Signal to Noise" is a web-native hypertext designed to be read by multiple people simultaneously. 

    The interface is linked to a database via Ajax. A PHP engine tracks the parallel navigations and behavior of active users and responds by broadcasting relevant fragments, subtext, and other ephemera to all readers in realtime. Readers' concurrent movements through the narrative have subtle effects on one another's experiences. While readers are unable to directly communicate among themselves or evoke representative avatars in the virtual environment (with one clear exception), echoes and ripples are unavoidably left on the surface of the global text with every followed link. In time, these ripples subside and disappear.
