    Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Each poem contains 17 syllables which are distributed over three lines: 5 7 5. Haiku traditionally reference a season and are generally observations of everyday life.

    haikU calls on three databases of potential haiku lines to randomly create a poem for any given moment in time. The challenge of writing successful random haiku, is that each line must be 'open' enough to create a connection with any two other random haiku lines. Successful random haiku develop an image in the reader's mind that gives cause for contemplation/reflection/awareness.

    haikU invites you, the net audience, to collaborate by writing individual lines of haiku and submitting them to the haiku database. Your contributions become available to haikU via the computer's random function.

  2. Moment

    This is a generative poem you can visit for years and continue to find things to surprise and delight. It is structured around a text— aptly named as “a strand” (as in a fiber or rope made of letters or characters)— which is shaped by “aspects,” which are programmed structures that shape and transform the strands through color, animation, scheduling, formatting, and other transformations possible in DHTML. Considering there are 10 “strands” (plus a “user-fed strand”) each of which can be shaped by 36 different “aspects,” each of which can have multiple controls and toggles, you don’t have to do the math to realize that this is a work of staggering generative possibilities. Combined with a few randomization and combinatorial touches, this is a work that will always welcome you with fresh moments, inviting you to play with its structures.   3. Precession of the Equinoxes

    This work uses similar software to that used in Babel, another 3D multi-user internet piece by the artist. Viewers logged in to the work are confronted with a 3D visualisation of a space formed as a receding array of words. As the viewer moves the mouse around the screen they are able to navigate this 3D environment. If the viewer types a word on their keyboard then when they press the RETURN key that word will appear in their own 3D array (the white words). Continuing to do this will cause the words to cascade through the array. These words are also broadcast to all the other viewers logged on (along with the viewers mouse coordinates, allowing each viewers 3D location to be calculated) such that everybody can read what the viewer has written. All the viewers are thus able to see what all the other viewers, who are simultaneously logged onto the site, are seeing. The multiple 3D views of the word-space are montaged together into a single shared image, where the actions of any one viewer effects what all the other viewers see.
