  1. my body — a Wunderkammer

    The author and artist Shelley Jackson has produced a corpus of work in print and electronic media that takes as its central focus the relationship between human identity and the body's constituent organs, fluids, connective tissues, and other parts. While her well-known Storyspace hypertext Patchwork Girl revisited the Frankenstein story from the viewpoint of a female monster, my body uses the HTML hypertext form to revitalize the memoir genre. As the reader selects elegantly drawn woodcut images of parts of the author's body, meditations and anecdotes associated with each body part are revealed.

  3. Memory and Motion: The Body in Electronic Writing

    Maria Angel and Anna Gibbs explore the new materialism of the corporeal body in electronic writing and online environments. They argue that electronic environments have a strong relationship with affective modes of communication highlighted by their appeal to sensory novelty through technological innovation—new media platforms proliferate the potentials for combining visibility with aural and tactile modes. Their essay argues for a new materialism in electronic culture, one that has serious implications for the way that we understand memory.

  4. Why Digital Literature Has Always Been “Beyond the Screen”

    Andrew Michael Roberts demonstrates that digital literature has always been beyond the screen. In many of the practices and framing ideas of electronic literature, he identifies recurrences of key conceptions of modernism and postmodernism such as literalization, enactment, difference, movement, etc. Nonetheless, as he argues, literature is embracing new forms of expression influenced by the evolving mediatechnological possibilities and the increased involvement of the recipient’s whole body.

  5. Wired

    This video poem presents a nightmarish image of a body that seems to be inspired by Hellraiser and The Matrix. A sitting skeletal naked body with an umbilical-like cord connected to his heart and a screen for a face, inside of which a face grotesquely screams, apparently in pain or a trance (or both) seems to be the speaker for the poem. The verbal part of the poem is delivered entirely by audio, and through electronically distorted voices. The pain in the lyric cyborg speaker for this poem raises questions about medical technologies that artificially extend human life through painful surgical procedures that insert devices like pacemakers to regulate biorhythms. Has this character become posthuman?

  6. Soul

    Miles away from your average Valentine’s Day e-card, this poem superposes pithy language about sex and love on a video of a large black fish breathing through its gills as the words float before it. The sounds and image are not in the least romantic, yet reinforce the idea of embodiment, put forth in such beneficial terms.

  7. Broken

    This poem is constructed around an erotic scenario between two recurring characters in Sondheim’s writing: Nikuko “a Russian ballet dancer” and Dr. Leopold Konninger. From the loading frame in this Flash piece, we are provided a point of view as if we’re the computer and are about to enter Sondheim’s imagination, and the audio doesn’t set this up as a comforting prospect. The poem seems to be designed to disturb as images of fragmented, objectified human beings gaze at one from positions of powerlessness and empowerment. Nikuko herself is portrayed as a kind of geisha dominatrix, particularly when juxtaposed with Dr. Konninger’s post-coital supine body. Subsequent images of a pile of heads and body parts and phrases like “carnage and extasy” create an unsettling mix of death and “la petit mort.”

  8. Subjective Boundaries: Shelley Jackson's Hypertexts and the Terrain of the Skin

    This presentation traces connections between Shelley Jackson's hypertext, "Patchwork Girl" (1995), and her more recent "Skin" Project (2003-present): a 2095 word short story published only once, tattooed word-by-word onto the bodies of applicants who have elected to become words, henceforth understood as embodying these words. Both works are interested in consequential relationships between living/dying bodies and texts: what it means to embody a text, what texts do to the body. Through avoiding traditional print media, both pieces also call into question the ways we read or write and the future of the book in the age of digital media.

  9. Kvinden ved siden af

    This is the story of two women whose souls switch bodies during their surgery after a traffic accident they were both involved in. The story is told in a standalone iPad app, narrated in part by the sister of one of the women and in part through a series of documents that the sister finds or is given: the doctor's report of the surgery, emails and chat transcripts from people reacting to the soul-swapping, and various other Although the story is entirely linear, the illustrations and the feeling of opening documents on the screen make this short story well suited to the tablet reading environment. The style of writing is humorous and at times somewhat caricatured, though also raising large questions about identity and mortality.

  10. Superstitious Appliances

    This set of six thematically linked poems revolve around appliances and obsessions about the body. From the outset, the Nelson seeks to unsettle the reader by taking a medieval, religious kind of image and placing it over a layer of what seems to be digital static, while a couple of soft audio tracks play: one a barely audible person speaking, and a throaty voice repeating “I will eat you.” As the reader explores this surface and clicks on links to go to the poems, she will be unsettled further by entering environments that respond to their presence in various ways. There is a learning curve for each poem as the reader figures out the interface enough to be able to read the texts, which increases the exposure to the environments Nelson has crafted for each short poem.
