  1. Electronic Literature and the Mashup of Analog and Digital Code

    This essay examines the complexity of contemporary electronic literary practice. It evaluates how electronic literature borrows from, and also influences, the reception of the textual message in other forms of communication that efficiently combine image, sound and text as binary data, as information that is compiled in any format of choice with the use of the computer. The text aims to assess what it means to write in literary fashion in a time when crossing over from one creative field to another is ubiquitous and transparent in cultural production. To accomplish this, I relate electronic literature to the concept of intertextuality as defined by Fredric Jameson in postmodernism, and assess the complexity of writing not only with words, but also with other forms of communication, particularly video. I also discuss Roland Barthes’s principles of digital and analogical code to recontextualize intertextuality in electronic writing as a practice part of new media. Moreover, I discuss a few examples of electronic literature in relation to mass media logo production, and relate them to the concept of remix.

  2. Along the Briny Beach

    Along the briny beach a garden grows. With silver bells and cockleshells, cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh. A coral orchard puts forth raucous pink blossoms. A bouquet of sea anemones tosses in the shallows. A crop of cliffs hedges a sand-sown lawn mown twice daily by long green-thumbed waves rowing in rolling rows. The shifting terrain where land and water meet is always neither land nor water and is always both. The sea garden’s paths are fraught with comings and goings. Sea birds in ones and twos. Scissor-beak, Kingfisher, Parrot and Scissor-tail. Changes in the Zoology. Causes of Extinction. From the ship the sea garden seems to glisten and drip with steam. Along a blue sea whose glitter is blurred by a creeping mist, the Walrus and the Carpenter are walking close at hand. A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk along the briny storied waiting in-between space. Wind blooms in the marram dunes. The tide far out, the ocean shrunken. On the bluff a shingled beach house sprouts, the colour of artichoke. On the horizon lines of tankers hang, like Chinese lanterns. Ocean currents collect crazy lawn ornaments. Shoes and shipwrecks, cabbages and kings.

  3. Fred & George

    Fred and George Weasley are the redheaded twins from the Harry Potter series and this poem poses them as lovers, endlessly stroking (etc.) fingers, wands, mouths, etc. and generally engaging in acts considered taboo for siblings in most cultures. This “Taroko Gorge” remix has the distinction of having the shortest data set among the remixes to date, proving that when one wishes to produce an endless poem, size doesn’t matter. More importantly, it concentrates the number of permutations of its elements so while it becomes repetitive sooner, it also takes less time to reach its conceptual climax.   4. Cierniste diody / Thorny diods

    This is a digital embezzlement of Bruno Schulz’s short story “Sierpień” (“August”). Some of the nouns have been cut out of Schulz’s text and randomly replaced with words taken from the book Polski Fiat 125p. Budowa. Eksploatacja.   5. Ouroboros and Jabberwock

    This diptych or bi-fold work presents readers with two re-workings of Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky:” on one hand, a fixed, cyclical hypertext in seven parts (Ouroboros), and on the other, an endless generative deformation that refigures the mock-epic as tennis game in Hell (Jabberwock). Both options are available at the start, but only in faint, translucent lettering.   6. The Infinite Woman

    The Infinite Woman is an interactive remix and erasure poetry platform. As a feminist critique and artistic intervention, the web app remixes excerpts from Edison Marshall’s novel The Infinite Woman (1950) and Simone de Beauvoir’s philosophy book The Second Sex (1949). An n-gram algorithm procedurally generates infinitely scrolling sentences that attempt to describe and critique an eternal feminine essence. Revealing patterns through iterative permutations, this algorithmic remix of Marshall’s and Beauvoir’s language stretches the logic of “the infinite woman” to the breaking point. Meanwhile, fog slowly obscures the screen, visually performing the concept and technique of erasure. Users can select sentences from the infinitely scrolling text to send to a canvas workspace, where they can erase words and rearrange sentences to create their own poems. These user-generated erasure poems proliferate possibilities for deconstructing and reimagining gendered subjectivity.
