  1. Digital Literature in France (conference presentation)

    The presentation briefly retraces the history of electronic literature in France, emphasizing the various literary and aesthetic tendencies and the corresponding structures (groups, magazines, etc.). The focus then shifts to French electronic literature communities. The presentation notably provides an account of a study that Bouchardon did in 2004-2007 for the Centre Pompidou in Paris (study included in the book "Un laboratoire de littératures", http://editionsdelabibliotheque.bpi.fr/livre/?GCOI=84240100044550). He analyzed a "dispositif" (mailing list, website, meetings) called e-critures, dedicated to electronic literature, with the hypothesis of the co-construction of a "dispositif", a field and a community. The presentation concludes with the possible characteristics of electronic literature in France (which might not be specific to France), both from a literary and from a sociological point of view.

  2. Editorial Process and the Idea of Genre in Electronic Literature in the Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 1

    The article focuses on two subjects: the process of editing the Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 1 (2006), and the idea of genre in electronic literature. The author was one of four editors of the first volume of the Collection, along with N. Katherine Hayles, Nick Montfort, and Stephanie Strickland. The Collection, which will be published on a regular basis, is intended to distribute contemporary electronic literature to a wider audience, and to provide a contextual and bibliographic apparatus to make electronic literature more accessible to audiences and educators. In the past decades, the forms of literary artifacts described as electronic literature have diversified to the extent that it is difficult to continue describe them using traditional terms of literary genre. The essay addresses some of the problems involved in classifying digital artifacts by genre, and suggests some avenues of addressing these epistemological challenges. The essay calls for a contextual understanding of works of electronic literature, based both on their nature as procedural artifacts and on their position within a historical continuum of avant-garde practices.

  3. Reading, Writing, and Teaching Creative Hypertext: A Genre-Based Pedagogy

    The present essay contributes a genre-based pedagogy, until now only hinted at by hypertext theorists and not imported into the domain of hypertext by genre theorists. While I focus on creative hypertexts—autobiographies and popular genres like soap operas and road trip stories—a genre-based pedagogy can also be used to guide students through the production of informational, academic, community or club Web sites, personal home pages, and whatever blurred or evolving genres students are inspired by and see fit to explore.

    I advance a genre-based pedagogy for teaching the reading and writing of creative hypertext to enable teachers of hypertext to start from what they know and to provide them and their students with concrete terms and models. Such a pedagogy, especially if informed by recent scholarship on genre's flexible and rhetorical nature, requires students to make various choices not only about form but about compositional concerns: tone, diction, prose style, character development, plot, setting, visual design, and hypertext navigation strategies.   5. Analysis of Fitting the Pattern

    The objective of this communication is the application of ideas and tools encountered in the field of study of narratology and its consideration as a narrative genre so that the chosen work, Fitting the Pattern, may be analysed and differences seen that may arise when approached from a different frame of the print. It is hoped to show with this approach, how in order to be studied, digital narrative works require new concepts and how more investigation is needed into how the reader receives the work. For example, after analyzing the work of Christine Wilks it was seen to be necessary to deepen the skills required by the reader in order to enter into the work, to establish functional guidelines for the reader, so as to remain within the orientation of the text, etc. It is not just a question concerning only in how the work is received, but also how space and the other approaches to the work need concepts and approaches which are more adequate for the reality presented by the digital narrative. As has been shown in the analysis of Fitting the Pattern, it has not been possible to capture all that is contained in the text using the type of analysis used up to now.

    Just as Walter Benjamin declared that all "great works of literature either dissolve a genre or invent one," Brian Kim Stefans argues that all successful works of electronic literature are sui generis and invent their own genre. There can be a vocabulary for this invention, however, and Stefans sets out “The Holy Grails of Electronic Literature,” “Six Varieties of Crisis,” and the “Surrealist Fortune Cookie.” Through these concepts, he describes the formal challenges, reading experiences, and fundamental textual units of electronic literature.   7. E-literary Diaspora – The Story of a Young Scholar's Journey from Writing to Faces

    In my dissertation from 2013 I close read pieces by David Jhave Johnston, mez and Johannes Hélden among others, with an interest in multimodal analysis and media philosophy. Back then, I chose to characterize Electronic Literature metaphorically as a literary diaspora in continuation of historical literary avant-gardes. The title of this years ELO conference made me think of e-lit as a new diaspora in itself – a culture, a movement, a family with historical roots, traditions and habits but already with several branches, new subdivisions and blends. The title of the conference also gave me the encouraging thought that I am still an e-lit scholar, though my current research project “Technologies of the Face in Contemporary Art” belongs to the tradition of visual art and new media art in a broader sense In my paper, I will closely analyze a piece that has proved to be a threshold between my two research projects and explain why. The installation The Aleph is made by Kim Yong Hun and was displayed in the ELO 2012 Media Art Show. It consists of two computer screens producing the images of two faces.

  8. The Law of Genre

    Jacques Derrida discusses “the law of genre” – the idea that genre has
    the function of imposing norms on literary and cultural practices: “As
    soon as the word ‘genre’ is sounded, as soon as it is heard, as soon as one
    attempts to conceive it, a limit is drawn. And when a limit is established,
    norms and interdictions are not far behind: ‘Do,’ ‘Do not’ says ‘genre,’
    the word ‘genre,’ the figure, the voice, or the law of genre” (Derrida 1980,
    p. 56). In Derrida’s view, genre functions more to exclude forms of literary
    practice than to elucidate them: “… as soon as a genre announces itself,
    one must respect a norm, one must cross a line of demarcation, one must
    not risk impurity, anomaly, or monstrosity” (p. 57).

  9. The Ideology of Genre: A Comparative Study of Generic Instability

    In a series of comparative essays on a range of texts embracing both high and popular culture from the early modern era to the contemporary period, The Ideology of Genrecounters both formalists and advocates of the "death of genre," arguing instead for the inevitability of genre as discursive mediation. At the same time, Beebee demonstrates that genres are inherently unstable because they are produced intertextually, by a system of differences without positive terms. In short, genre is the way texts get used. To deny that genres exist is to deny, in a sense, the possibility of reading; if genres exist, on the other hand, then they exist not as essences but as differences, and thus those places within and between texts where genres "collide" reveal the connections between generic status, interpretive strategy, ideology, and the use-value of language.

  10. Electronic Literature's Past and Future

    Scott Rettberg will present his monograph Electronic Literature, which describes new forms and genres of writing that exploit the capabilities of computers and networks – literature that would not be possible without the contemporary digital context. Rettberg places the most significant genres of electronic literature in historical, technological, and cultural contexts. These include combinatory poetics, hypertext fiction, interactive fiction (and other game-based digital literary work), kinetic and interactive poetry, and networked writing based on our collective experience of the Internet. Rettberg will also present some of his own work and ask us to consider how digital literary art might help us to engage with contemporary societal challenges.
