  2. The Intruder

    "In Natalie Bookchin's piece, The Intruder, we are presented with a sequence of ten videogames, most of which are adapted from classics such as Pong and Space Invaders. We interact via moving or clicking the mouse, and by making whateve we make of/with/from the story. Meaning is always constructed, never on a plate. The interaction is less focused on videogame play than it is on advancing the narrative of the story we hear throughout the presentation of the ten games. The story is the Jorge Louis Borges piece The Intruder with a few changes. The female in the story is "the intruder" She is as a possession of the two closely bonded miscreant brothers enmeshed in a hopeless triangle of psycho-sexual possession with homoerotic undertones. Finally one of them kills her to end the tension between the two men. Game over. Story over. Bookchin presents an awareness of being an intruder, herself, in the (previously?) male-dominated world of videogame creation and enjoyment. The videogame paradigms are subverted, mocked, and implicitly criticized for their shallow competitive and violent nature not unrelated to the nature of the violence of the males.

  3. Gabriella infinita

    Gabriella Infinita es una obra metamórfica. Su presencia corre paralela a una intensa y a la vez voluble experiencia de escritura. Nace como toda obra artística: por gracia de una necesidad expresiva muy intima. Pero, apenas brota, empieza a buscar alocadamente su forma, como ávida de cuerpo, como presintiendo su fragilidad y su contingencia. Y termina comprendiendo que estaba destinada a la volatilidad.

    Pero esa conciencia siempre estuvo lejos de ser alcanzada fácilmente. Sufrió al comienzo, en su primera fase de formalización, la negligencia majadera de sus lectores; después, la terquedad imposible de su autor que le impidió mutar con libertad. Finalmente, hubo de someterse a la desintegración de sus elementos. Ahora, en su tercera metamorfosis, espera nerviosa, como una quinceañera asustada en su primera cita a ciegas, el encuentro con su lector.

  4. Homer's Iliad

    The online interpretation of Homer's classic The Iliad, transformed for computer multimedia by Barry Smylie, Jeff Wietor, Susan Katz, and Ryan Douglas is an excellent example of an attempt to take a classic work of literature and adapt to the particular affordances of the contemporary computer. Produced from 1999­‐2007, this work not only produces a contemporary interpretation of the classic, but also tracks some of the new media shifts that occurred from the late 1990s to the present. The multimedia work allows the reader to switch between the text of Samuel Butler's translation of The Iliad and contemporary multimedia interpretations of several sorts. For the first nine books of The Iliad, this translation takes the form of illustrations, collages produced in Photoshop, which mix classical imagery, such as statuary and Grecian urns, with more contemporary imagery. The battles between the Greeks and Trojans in this version include imagery from professional wrestling shows, advertisements, and American football contests. Helen is represented with imagery reminiscent of soap operas of soft‐core pornography.

In this project different parts of the play are appropriated for cyberspace. to examine different themes including: hyperlinked narration in cyberspace, experience of reading mediated by information retrieval tools, collaboratively generated content and conformism, our desires and anxieties in cyberspace and the temporal experience across different media.   6. petite brosse à dépoussiérer la fiction

    petite brosse à dépoussiérer la fiction" (small brush to dust off fiction) is a generative piece written in French. A scene of thriller is generated at each time you run the program or ask for a new scene. This scene explores different possibilities of a scenario. But the reader must continually "dust" a picture that covers the text while reading. The text is a pastiche: the scene is located at a time in a single location. Some features happen out of this room, they are computed by  the program but not expressed into the narrative. The piece begins with some "adapted" poems by Jean de La Fontaine.

  8. Eat Your Tits and Puppets

    An animated adaptation of a poem written by Claire Donato. Cascades of textual progressions -- appearances, disappearances, fades, mirrorings -- are scripted in detail and played back by a custom Java engine across two "pages." The work was presented and read by Claire Donato and Ian Hatcher at ELO_AI 2010 in Providence.

  10. 6 avatars en quête d'auteur / 6 Avatars in Quest of an Author

    6 avatars en quête d'auteur est une création inscrite à la fois dans une démarche artistique et universitaire. Elle est le fruit de la collaboration de Daniel Bouillot et de ses étudiants : Yannick Berthier, Claire Bonaventure et Christel Cerruti. Cette œuvre pose de manière aiguë le rapport problématique entre la narration interactive et le texte, en mettant en scène des avatars à la recherche d’un texte à jouer. Bouillot réinterprète ainsi la célèbre pièce de Pirandello à l’ère du numérique, offrant aux internautes des scénettes interactives, librement inspirées des grands auteurs (Shakespeare, Beckett, Camus, etc.). Ainsi Le Mythe de Sysiphe de Camus est adapté en Shoot them up, ou encore Rhinocéros de Ionesco en questionnaire à choix multiples interactif. On retrouve six avatars/acteurs, dans 24 scènes se référant à 24 exergues de 24 grands auteurs, à travers des simulations 3D plus ou moins interactives.
