  1. Cybertext: Perspectives on Ergodic Literature

    Cybertext explores the aesthetics and the textual dynamics of digital literature and its many diverse genres such as hypertext fiction, computer games, computer generated poetry and prose, and collaborative Internet texts such as MUDs. However, instead of insisting on the uniqueness and newness of "electronic writing" or "interactive fiction" (phrases which mean very little) the author situates these new literary forms within the larger and much older field of "ergodic" literature, from the ancient Chinese I Ching to the literary experiments of the OuLiPo. These are open, dynamic texts where the reader must perform specific actions to generate a literary sequence, which may vary for every reading. Aarseth constructs a theoretical model that describes how these literary forms are different from each other, and demonstrates how the widely assumed divide between paper texts and electronic texts breaks down under careful analysis.

  2. Hyperworks: On Digital Literature and Computer Games

    This study investigates the effects of digitization on literature and literary culture with focus on works of literary fiction and other kinds of works inspired by such works. The concept of "hyperworks" refers to works intended to be navigated multisequentially, i.e. the users create their own paths through the work by making choices. The three articles that make up the dissertation include analyses of individual works as well as discussions of theoretical models and concepts. The study combines perspectives from several theoretical traditions: narratology, hypertext theory, ludology (i.e. game studies), sociology of literature, textual criticism, media theory, and new media studies. This study investigates the effects of digitization on literature and literary culture with focus on works of literary fiction and other kinds of works inspired by such works.   4. Aesthetics and Literature: A Problematic Relation?

    The paper argues that there is a proper for literature within aesthetics but that care must be taken in identifying just what the relation is. In characterising aestehtic pleasure associating with literature it is all too easy to fall into reductive accounts, for example, of literature of merely "fine writing". Bellelettrist or formalistic accounts of literature are rejected, as are to other kinds of reduction, to pure meaning properties and to a kind of narrative realism. The idea is developed that literature - both poetry and prose fiction - invites its own distinctive kind of aesthetic appreciation which far from being at odds with critical practice, in fact chimes well with it.

  6. Grasping at Loose Bindings: Thoughts on Language, Literature, Communication in a Time of Change

    Davin Heckman is a Fulbright Scholar with Digital Culture this year, and will hold a lecture on his current research on Thursday, April 12, 2012.

    Heckman will discuss literature in a time of media change.  Part of an ongoing research project, this talk will explore the objective tendency of neoliberalism and the digital revolution, and the humanistic potential of emerging literary and critical practices.

  9. Genre Trouble: Narrativism and the Art of Simulation

    Currently in game and digital culture studies, a controversy rages over the relevance of narratology for game aesthetics. One side argues that computer games are media for telling stories, while the opposing side claims that stories and games are different structures that are in effect doing opposite things. One crucial aspect of this debate is whether games can be said to be "texts," and thereby subject to a textual-hermeneutic approach. Here we find the political question of genre at play: the fight over the games' generic categorization is a fight for academic influence over what is perhaps the dominant contemporary form of cultural expression. After forty years of fairly quiet evolution, the cultural genre of computer games is finally recognized as a large-scale social and aesthetic phenomenon to be taken seriously. In the last few years, games have gone from media non grata to a recognized field of great scholarly potential, a place for academic expansion and recognition.

    Anastasia Salter’s “Convergent Devices, Dissonant Genres” assesses the implications of the iPad for the state of literature. Looking at “traditional” approaches that re-mediate print for digital devices, “enhanced” approaches which add “special features” to extant texts and forms, pre-tablet eliterature re-experienced in the new environment, and finally the creation of original apps with literary qualities, Salter’s work is a critical document of the impact a single interface can have on the development of literary culture in the 21st Century.
