2. MIDIPoet

   In its current version (which was released in 2002), MIDIPoet consists of two applications: MIDIPoet Composer and MIDIPoet Player. As their names suggest, Composer contains a set of tools for creating MIDIPoet pieces, and Player performs them. The MIDIPoet environment has its own programming language, made up from relatively complex text commands. In order to make things easier (and allow other people to approach the tool with relatively little pain), MIDIPoet Composer offers a visual way of creating MIDIPoet pieces, so there is no need to write code. MIDIPoet itself was written in a combination of C++ and Visual Basic, and only runs under Windows.

3. Google Earth: A Poem for Voice and Internet

   This highly professional video documents a live performance of this poem, which uses primarily three materials: speeches by presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and Google Earth. These works are brought together in a political and economic mashup that incorporates texts read aloud by Portela in English and translated to Spanish and Portuguese, voice recordings of the speeches, and a large projected video of Google Earth navigating to parts of the world that resonate with the poem. Portela intervenes upon these materials in a variety of ways, defamiliarizing them towards the poetic, emphasizing particular words or passages by isolating and repeating them, and placing them in conversation with its other materials through juxtaposition and superposition. 5. The Accidental Artist

   The Accidental Artist was an ongoing exhibition in Second Life at Odyssey, June 2008 - January 2009, by Alan Sondheim, with help from Sugar Seville, Azure Carter, Gary Nanes, Sandy Baldwin, and Frances van Scoy at the Virtual Environments Laboratory, West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia. The show changed daily and the gave me an opportunity to study the phenomenology of a virtual world in relation to avatar-human objectivity. The following texts were written during the generation of the show.

7. Completely Automated

   I have formally performed “Completely Automated” on stage at a few conferences/venues and I think it could be a good fit for HASTAC’s themes. I would be very excited to perform it as part of an evening of performances. Total run-time is a duration of 15 minutes and it occurs in three parts. In the first part, I do a performative reading of a “historical” document that I have forged. To create the language of the forgery, I programmed a computer program to run a text analysis on a group of historical law tracts. I then skimmed the results and authored my own version of an early law tract. Calling on theater training, I perform this poetic text. In the second stage, the live performance overlaps and blends in with a short video that tells the story of how this forged document is digitally archived on google books as an “authentic” text. This video is blended with voice over of poetic text taken from the document. In the last stage I give a final performative reading of the changes that were made to the document when a group of users prepared it for upload in the digital archives.

9. Vienna Underground: The Third Woman Project

   Multithreaded multisited multiversion project that played on Third Man by Orson Welles, dealing with themes of bioterrorism. A film was central to all iterations of the project, which involved installations, mobile phone videos, performance, fashion, and site-specific variations.

10. mayday

    Hypertext centered on Mass Observation at the time of New Labor's rise to power, a contributory crowd-sourced work in HTML.

    "This site went on-line at 05:00hrs (BST) May 1st 1998, unfolding over the day on an hourly basis until 04:00 hrs (BST) May 2nd. It presents selected extracts from a project, initiated by poet / publisher cris cheek as a nod to Mass Observation, which received a wide range of texts and images from the everyday on Mayday 97. We invited responses throughout Mayday 98, and they were uploaded as they came in.The site now stands as a writing, drawn from those details of their everyday lives that its contributors wished to register. Our responses to the accumulating mass of observations form part of what became, for us, a 'performance' of 'mayday'.....
