  3. Pentimento

    This narrative poem is a fascinating type of hypertext because instead of having five primary nodes from which to follow linear threads it uses a layering interface for navigation. The reader, instead of clicking on links, scrapes away at images to reveal an image beneath, and can continue to scrape away until she reaches the end of that narrative thread.   5. Vive la Bagatelle

    Vive la Bagatelle is a short, kinetic digital poem in the Italian Futurist style, featuring the song "The Airplane" by Futurist composer George Anthiel. Through deft manipulation of Flash CS4 and Actionscript much of the prose seen is randomly selected and displayed on screen. The end result is a new poem with each viewing, every bit as mesmerizing as it is curious.

    From the Eastgate Systems, Inc. advertisement:

    "Intergrams introduces us to a new species in the word forest, an infinity of possibilities, an arena with structure that is still open, that behaves, that invites. Intergrams is the exact analog of the idea that the domain of music is anything which may be heard, or that the domain of the visual arts is anything which may be seen. Intergrams is not an injection or gift of someone else's wisdom, but connections that were there for you to make all along, entirely yours, connections that spring forward with the impetus of the energy of the work. In Intergrams, space replaces time as the fundamental dimension-set for text as opposed to speech. Complex links between parts of the written text separated widely in space are simply drawn directly. The method of directly, graphically linking the pieces of text by a relationship is used for the syntax itself."

  7. Mechanical Bride

    This conceptual poem exists as an enigmatic electronic object and a record of an online performance. To best appreciate the event and its record, one should be aware of several contexts:

    1. Marcel Duchamp’s piece titled The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (a.k.a. The Large Glass). (In French: La mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même)
    2. The now defunct Modern Bride.com website.
    3. The Defib Interview space: an IRC chatroom hosted by Webartery.com(now 404), an online artists collective created and curated by Jim Andrews as an extension of the Webartery Yahoo Group (still active).

    As can be seen in the piece, Warnell created a mashup of the first two conceptual spaces, and invited the Webartery community to view the page and participate in a performance of the piece.
    During the chat, Warnell— using his identity PBN (Poem by Nari)— posted a sequence of 180 lines of code poetry (plus a “title” at the beginning and end) inspired by IRC commands. The participants reacted and responded to the lines as they appeared during the chat, numbered in a countdown from 180, as well as to Duchamp’s puzzling artwork.

  8. Interspecies and Random/Electronic-Poetry. From “Black on Sheep” (Bovine poem) to “Robot-poem@s”

    This presentation will explore random e-poetry and interspecies based on two electronic works: one that intersect humanity and insect-like robotics titled “Robot-poem@s”, and an eproject/poem based on a performance with sheep: “Negro en ovejas/Black on Sheep.” Robotpoem@s consist of insect-like robots (five quadrupeds and a bigger hexapod) whose legs and bodies are engraved with the seven parts of a poem written from the robot’s point of view in bilingual format (Spanish and English). Binary constructs such as creator/creature are questioned by these creatures purposely chosen from open-source models resembling insects and spiders, thus emphasizing anxiety and removal from humans while underlying the already problematic relation between humans and technology. The final segment of the poem, number VII, rephrases the biblical pronouncement on the creation of humans, as perceived by the robot: “According to your likeness / my Image.” With this statement, the notion of creation is reformulated and bent by the power of electronics, ultimately questioning its binary foundations.
