  1. The Good Captain

    The Good Captain is an adaptation of Herman Melville’s novella “Benito Cereno.” Melville’s original story relies upon the main character’s first-person perceptions of the events that unfold in front of him. This reliance on P.O.V. is why I chose to distribute the story using the web service Twitter. Twitter limits updates to 140 characters of text, and so this story is broken up into small, 2-3 line paragraphs. The temporal nature of this storytelling method required that the story include frequent reminders of previous events, to help keep readers aware of the context of the events. This was especially important given that the time span of the bulk of the events is about twelve hours, and the length of time that the story ran for was four months.

    The Good Captain began broadcasting over Twitter on November 3, 2007. It concluded on February 29, 2008.

  2. When I Was President

    When I Was President is a portrait of absolute power as depicted by a fictional President of the United States. This President is unnamed and non-historical, that is, he has never, and could never, exist, yet what he represents is archetypal in nature and endures within the optimism, dangers, and limitations of political power. The work is created in Flash and divided into nine sections, each of which addresses a different Presidential act of power, and its consequences. The acts of power are elemental and metaphoric--they are simultaneously absurd, idiosyncratic, and impossible, yet they seem to tell some basic truth about the promise of absolute power, and its inherent failures. This work uses images, videos, and audio files acquired online, and modified by the artist. A credits page is included on the site.

  3. Blue Velvet

    Blue Velvet is a documentary about Hurricane Katrina and its affect upon New Orleans, LA. “Combining sound, text, photography, video, and several maps, the piece sculpts an evocative and poignant landscape that nonetheless refuses all registers of nostalgia, insisting as it does that we locate Katrina and the Crescent City among multiple trajectories of policy, memory, and representation”

    Blue Velvet: Re-Dressing New Orleans in Katrina's Wake" is an interactive essay enabling its users to submerge themselves in a poetic wordscape describing the contours of American racial politics post-Katrina.

  4. Signal to Noise

    "Signal to Noise" is a web-native hypertext designed for concurrent navigations by multiple readers, whose interactions with the text subtly influence one another's parallel readings in realtime. 

    Artist Statement:

    "Signal to Noise" is a web-native hypertext designed to be read by multiple people simultaneously. 

    The interface is linked to a database via Ajax. A PHP engine tracks the parallel navigations and behavior of active users and responds by broadcasting relevant fragments, subtext, and other ephemera to all readers in realtime. Readers' concurrent movements through the narrative have subtle effects on one another's experiences. While readers are unable to directly communicate among themselves or evoke representative avatars in the virtual environment (with one clear exception), echoes and ripples are unavoidably left on the surface of the global text with every followed link. In time, these ripples subside and disappear.

  6. MyNovel.org

    MyNovel.org (2006) takes six classic novels (Moby DickUncle Tom's CabinThe Scarlet LetterLolita1984, and On The Road) and compresses them into four sentences apiece; at any point, if visitors wish to, they can write their own four sentence novel by using the tools included on the site.

  7. Lord's Prayer, The

    "Lord's Prayer, The" (2007) takes the original English version of "The Lord's Prayer" (in this case, a variation of the King James Version) and, using the same words, creates an entirely new poem.

  8. Rockface II

    Rockface II revisions the classic landscapes of the Canadian Rockies, using transition to systematically deconstruct and recombine the mountain scenery. In the process, the work explores concepts of pictorialism, scale, time and metamorphosis. At the same time, it examines liminality of narrative through the introduction of subtly embedded human imagery.

  9. haikU

    Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Each poem contains 17 syllables which are distributed over three lines: 5 7 5. Haiku traditionally reference a season and are generally observations of everyday life.

    haikU calls on three databases of potential haiku lines to randomly create a poem for any given moment in time. The challenge of writing successful random haiku, is that each line must be 'open' enough to create a connection with any two other random haiku lines. Successful random haiku develop an image in the reader's mind that gives cause for contemplation/reflection/awareness.

    haikU invites you, the net audience, to collaborate by writing individual lines of haiku and submitting them to the haiku database. Your contributions become available to haikU via the computer's random function.

    Datafeeds is a short (21 node) exploration of a single incident in three universes (hearing, sight, and feeling). You can follow the story by clicking on the braid, the page numbers, or the connecting thoughts.

    Artist's statement:

    Hypertext/new media writing/electronic literature is first and foremost an exploration into possibilities. What if links can hold meaning—from emphasizing the "anchor" word or image (the place to click on the link) to coloring the destination? (Of course, many systems held out for multiple types of links—where we see a difference in causal, direct, conditional, etc links—and what would happen if artists and writers got their hands on those kinds of links?) What would happen if text could move—even to surround the reader’s body? (Caves and other holographic technologies make this possible.) What would happen if text and sound and images were inextricably bound together in an orgy of meaning?
