St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research was founded by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, acting jointly with the Bureau of the Dept. for Literature and Language, Russian Academy of Sciences, basing upon resolution of the Academic Council of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research of 1997
The foundation of the branch aimed mainly at the improvement of the structure of interdiscipliary, basic and applied research of culture. By the Resolution of the St. Petersburg Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences the St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research was incorporated into the structure of science institutions of the St. Petersburg Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, run by the Russian Academy of Sciences. Liubava Moreva (Ph.D., ass. professor) was appointed its Director.
Since 2004 Doctor of Philology Dimitri Spivak has been its Director.
Since 2006 the Branch as well as the whole Institute have been subordinate to the Federal Agency of Culture and Cinematography.
A long-term research and cultural programme is being conducted by the Branch staff, the main goal thereof being the creation of a multidisciplinary information and communication space to secure dynamics, epistemological and heuristical value of interdisciplinary practices. Interdisciplinary and philosophical and culturological research major for the Branch.
