  1. Entre Ville

    Entre Ville was commissioned in 2006 by OBORO, an artist-run centre in Montréal, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Conseil des Arts de Montréal. J. R. Carpenter writes: "Although I had lived in Montréal for 15 years at the time of the commission, Entre Ville was my first major work about my adopted city. It took me that long to learn the vocabulary. I don’t mean French, or Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Yiddish or any of the other languages spoken in my neighbourhood. I refer, rather, to a visual, tactile, aural, sensorial vocabulary. My home office window opens into a jumbled intimacy of back balconies, yards, gardens and alleyways. Daily my dog and I walk through this interior city sniffing out stories. Poetry is not hard to find between the long lines of peeling-paint fences plastered with notices, spray painted with bright abstractions and draped with trailing vines.

  2. Voyage Into the Unknown

    On May 25, 1869, you join the crew of one-armed Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell along with eight other fellow veterans, hunters and trappers, in an attempt to be the first to navigate the Colorado River through the vast unmapped maze of canyons in the heart of the Great American Desert. Playing the role of one of the crew members, you are well aware that no European-American has boated the formidable Colorado River -- not, at least, and written about it. Turning inward... this is, perhaps, the final American frontier, a terra incognita. This Flash-based interactive work is constructed using an innovative, sequentially loading horizontally scrolling format in which users travel across fiction and documentary artifact. You will travel across writing modes as well as spaces. Knowledge may lie in traveling among such modes. First comes the adventure, then comes its representation. Much later, comes critical examination, and, perhaps, as a whole, re-invention... The work uses the interactive format to bridge genres and modes of expression.

  3. The Last Performance

    Author description: The Last Performance [dot org] is a constraint-based collaborative writing, archiving and text-visualization project responding to the theme of lastness in relation to architectural forms, acts of building, a final performance, and the interruption (that becomes the promise) of community. The visual architecture of The Last Performance [dot org] is based on research into "double buildings," a phrase used here to describe spaces that have housed multiple historical identities, with a specific concern for the Hagia Sophia and its varied functions of church, mosque, and museum. The project uses architectural forms as a contextual framework for collaborative authorship. Source texts submitted to the project become raw material for a constantly evolving textual landscape.

  4. The Cape

    The Cape is a short work that engages the history of visual print-based authority by combining impersonal, government-created images with a purportedly personal story. Carpenter animates decades-old black-and-white photographs, illustrations, and maps, adding to these a few laconic caption-sized texts to extend an exploration of "place" that digital space evokes.(Source: Electronic Literature Collection, Vol. 1)

  5. my Molly (departed)

    my Molly (departed), formerly titled Twittering, is a textual instrument designed as a performance application. The pieces remixes text, image, audio, and video triggered through keyboard interaction. The work has been performed at the OpenPort Performance Festival (Chicago), ePoetry 2007 (Paris), The Codework Workshop (West Virginia University), The Electronic Literature in Europe Conference (Bergen Norway), and the Interrupt Festival (Brown University).

    The piece coexists with a novel (Free Dogma Press) that was written simultaneous to the development of this work. Where the novel plays on aspects of time, and draws from sources such as Joyce, Strindberg, Beckett, Dante, among others; the hypermedia textual instrument combines these in a more immediate, collapsed manner.

  6. Marginalia in the Library of Babel

    "Marginalia in the Library of Babel" presents a metafictional, metahypertextual narrative about one man's discovery of his ability to write in the margins of the Internet, to finally make his marks on the infinite network, marks that will ultimately lead to his erasure.

    The piece is written through annotations written upon web pages archived from the Internet all related to Borges and the many implementations of his work, partial and abandoned though they be, that litter the Internet.

  7. FILMTEXT 2.0

    FILMTEXT 2.0 is an elaborate work of net art that investigates emerging forms of electronic literature in relation to interactive cinema, live A/V performance, games, and remix culture. It remediates formal experiments from older media like film, video art, and the visual/metafiction novel.

    "FILMTEXT" is a digital narrative created for cross-media platforms. It is has appeared as a museum installation, a net art site, a conceptual art ebook, an mp3 concept album, and a series of live A/V performances. In the initial 1.0 iteration of the net art site, commissioned by PlayStation 2 in conjunction with Amerika's "How To Be An Internet Artist" retrospective at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, Amerika referred to "FILMTEXT" as "the third part of my new media trilogy," following his two other major works of Internet art, "GRAMMATRON" and "PHON:E:ME."

  8. Ambulance: An Electronic Novel

    Very little information about this work is available online. P. Sugarman writes that "Ambulance is about some Gen-Xers who run into a string of spectacularly bad luck involving a car accident and a serial killer disguised as an ambulance driver. One of the most effective elements here is the music sampling. The droning repetition of the musical phrases, over & over while you absorb slices of the story, gives the whole experience an obsessive, claustrophobic feeling."   10. I Have Said Nothing

    This hypertext narrative includes two fatal car crashes. The plot of this story motivates its readers to navigate their way through the story of loss, death, and media. This chilling story also encourages the readers to a chaotic retrospective thinking and reflection.
    With the use of hypertext links, the plot only progresses by the help from its readers through active participation and the choices they make with the point-and-click system
