MQR is an eclectic interdisciplinary journal of arts and culture that seeks to combine the best of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction with outstanding critical essays on literary, cultural, social, and political matters. The flagship journal of the University of Michigan, MQR draws on lively minds here and elsewhere, seeking to present accessible work of all varieties for sophisticated readers from within and without the academy. In addition to choice creative work, we publish special issues dedicated to timely themes, such as Vietnam: Beyond the Frame and Bookishness: The New Fate of Reading in the Digital Age, and special clusters of essays on individual topics, like Motown, Politics and Detroit, or the Age of Obama. MQR has published work by Margaret Atwood, Juan Cole, Robert Coles, Carol Gilligan, Maxine Hong Kingston, Alan Liu, Barry Lopez, Czeslaw Milosz, Toni Morrison, Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Rorty, Eric J. Sundquist, John Updike, William Julius Wilson, and other authorities in their fields. In recent years, we’ve focused as well on publishing exciting younger writers, such as Sharon Pomerantz, Keith Haworth, Michael Byers, and Benjamin Busch, as well as essayists and scholars like Leah Price, Esther Schor, and Lynn Levin. We try to include at least one story, essay, or poem by a previously unpublished writer in every issue.

MQR, founded in 1962, is the University of Michigan's flagship journal, publishing each season a collection of essays, interviews, memoirs, fiction, poetry, and book reviews. Since 1979, when an issue called "The Moon Landing and Its Aftermath" appeared, one issue each year has been entirely devoted to a special theme. Some of MQR's most recent special issues are "Vietnam: Beyond the Frame," "The Documentary Imagination," and "China." In the last two decades MQR has published work by Margaret Atwood, Robert Coles, Carol Gilligan, Maxine Hong Kingston, Barry Lopez, Czeslaw Milosz, Toni Morrison, Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Rorty, Eric J. Sundquist, John Updike, William Julius Wilson, and other authorities in their fields, as well as some of the finest contemporary fiction and poetry.

MQR publishes in print on a quarterly basis and is available by subscription. Issues are made available online six months after print publication.
