Califia
Califia is a multimedia, interactive, hypertext fiction for CD-ROM. Califia allows the reader to wander and play in the landscape of historic/magic California. It is a computer-only creation of interactive stories, photos, graphics, maps, music, and movement. It has Three Narrating Characters, Four Directions of the Compass, Star Charts, Map Case, Archives Files, 500 Megabytes, 800 Screens, 2400 Images, 30 Songs, and 500 Words.
One scholar has written of Califia that it is designed to lead the reader "to discover the lost cache of California through her wanderings within the story space." Another writer calls it "a metaphysical quest rather than a conventional mystery", noting that the central question of the treasure remains unresolved. It has been termed a classic work of hypermedia, and literary critic and hypertext scholar Katherine Hayles has cited it as one of the establishing texts for electronic literature.

Electronic Literature in the University
Commentary on the "Electronic Literature in the University Panel" at the 2002 Electronic Literature Symposium: State of the Arts, organized by the Electronic Literature Organization and hosted by the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) . Larry McCaffery moderated the panel, which featured Loss Pequeño Glazier, Alan Liu, Sue Thomas, and Victoria Vesna. Panelists discussed challenges facing academics trying to integrate electronic literature within existing arts and humanities programs, where electronic literature was most likely to find institutional support within university systems, the need for accessible, well-designed digital archives, and the dangers that interdisciplinary e-lit scholars might encounter.

Reading, Describing, and Evaluating Electronic Literature for Archiving
In programmierbaren Medien produzierte Literatur erfordert eine Rekonzeptionalisierung des Rezeptionsprozesses sowie die Entwicklung neuer Konzepte zur Bewertung von (elektronischer) Literatur. Dies ist notwendig, wenn kinetische oder vom Computer zufällig rekombinierte und generierte Texte, interaktive Erzählungen, Hyperfictions oder Gedichte, die als bewegte Buchstaben auf dem Bildschirm erscheinen, Analyseobjekte für Archivierungsprozesse darstellen. Erst wenn diese Voraussetzungen erfüllt sind, können tragfähige Verfahren zur Archivierung und Bewertung dieser Literatur entwickelt werden. Es geht daher nicht um die Frage, wie überlieferte Texte digitalisiert und archiviert werden können. Vielmehr geht es bei den laufenden Initiativen der „Electronic Literature Organization“ (ELO), die im Folgenden vorgestellt werden sollen, um „born-digital works“, d.h. um „elektronische Literatur“, „Netzliteratur“, oder „Literatur in neuen Medien“ (um nur drei der zahlreichen Bezeichnungen des aufstrebenden Forschungsfeldes zu nennen).

Canonizing Hypertext: Explorations and Constructions
from the publisher: Description This innovative monograph focuses on a contemporary form of computer-based literature called 'literary hypertext', a digital, interactive, communicative form of new media writing. Canonizing Hypertext combines theoretical and hermeneutic investigations with empirical research into the motivational and pedagogic possibilities of this form of literature. It focuses on key questions for literary scholars and teachers: How can literature be taught in such a way as to make it relevant for an increasingly hypermedia-oriented readership? How can the rapidly evolving new media be integrated into curricula that still seek to transmit ‘traditional’ literary competence? How can the notion of literary competence be broadened to take into account these current trends? This study, which argues for hypertext’s integration in the literary canon, offers a critical overview of developments in hypertext theory, an exemplary hypertext canon and an evaluation of possible classroom applications.

Dene Grigar
Dene Grigar is Professor and Director of The Creative Media & Digital Culture Program at Washington State University Vancouver whose research focuses on the creation, curation, preservation, and criticism of Electronic Literature, specifically building multimedial environments and experiences for live performance, installations, and curated spaces; desktop computers; and mobile media devices. She has authored 14 media works such as “Curlew” (2014), “A Villager’s Tale” (2011), the “24-Hour Micro E-Lit Project” (2009), “When Ghosts Will Die” (2008), and “Fallow Field: A Story in Two Parts" (2005), as well as 54 scholarly articles adn three books. She also curates exhibits of electronic literature and media art, mounting shows at the British Computer Society and the Library of Congress and for the Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) and the Modern Language Association (MLA), among other venues.

Electronic Literature: Where Is It?
Countering Andrew Gallix's suggestion in a Guardian blog essay, "Is e-literature just one big anti-climax," that electronic literature is finished, Dene Grigar proposes that it may not be e-lit, but rather the institution of humanities teaching, that is in a state of crisis. And e-lit, she proposes, could be well placed to revive the teaching of literature in schools and universities.The title of Grigar's essay was adapted by the Electronic Literature Organization 2012 Conference Planning Committee in its call for proposals.

Pieces of Herself
Pieces of Herself is an exploration of feminine embodiment and identity in relationship to public and private space. Using a drag-and-drop game interface, viewers scroll through familiar environments (e.g., domestic, outdoor, work) to collect metaphorical "pieces" of the self and arrange them in compositions inside the body. As each piece enters the body, it triggers audio clips from interviews with women, music loops, and sound effects, resulting in a layered narrative. The project, which was inspired by Elizabeth Grosz's theories about embodiment, comments on social inscription of the body. The environments are composites of more than 400 photographs; the pieces include 40 vector drawings, and the audio clips include segments from interviews with 10 women.

The Fugue Book
Author description: Written in Catalan, The Fugue Book thematizes the mutability and precarious aspects of personal identity. Using "Facebook Connect," the story draws personal information about the reader and his friends (the main characters) from Facebook itself. The work combines a variety of modes, genres, and platforms: wikis, discussion forums, erotic stories, blogs, and social media. Most texts are actual email messages, which is to say that the real email of the reader is a fundamental component of the text. The multimedia structure is very simple in that it only integrates static images, parts of speech synthesis (adapted to the reader), and text. The languages of programming are ActionScript and PHP.

D. Fox Harrell is an associate professor of digital media at MIT. The National Science Foundation has recognized him with a CAREER Award for his project "Computing for Advanced Identity Representation." He is currently completing a book, Phantasmal Media: An Approach to Imagination, Computation, and Expression, for the MIT Press.

Jeffrey R. Di Leo
Jeffrey R. Di Leo has taught at Indiana University, Bloomington; Georgia Tech; and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Currently, he is Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, and Professor of English and Philosophy at the University of Houston-Victoria. He is also president of the Southern Comparative Literature Association and executive director of the Society for Critical Exchange.
In addition to being editor and publisher of the American Book Review, Di Leo is founding editor of the journal symplok?, which was awarded the Phoenix Award for Significant Editorial Achievement (2000) by The Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ), and editor of the book series "Class in America" published by the University of Nebraska Press.
