    In A Dream with Demons, Edward Falco invents a world where bruised adults attempt, over and over, to rewrite the violent scripts of their childhood. Preston Morris is an accomplished lawyer and novelist who writes painful, provocative stories to shore up fragments of his own desperate life. One of Preston's works, which forms the core of A Dream with Demons, tells of a sadly streetwise adolescent named Missy who struggles to come of age during the short space of a weekend when her mother finally leaves her tortured, brilliant lover, the artist Val Rivson.

    Preston's genius -- or is it Falco's? -- is the accuracy with which he portrays the sublime compulsions of several tortured yet resilient people. Holding everything together is the unique hypertext structure of A Dream with Demons, which dramatizes a theme evident throughout: how the past can compel the present, through the fragmentary, unreliable, but ultimately persistent medium of memory.

  2. Samplers: Nine Vicious Little Hypertexts

    Deena Larsen's Samplers: Nine Vicious Little Hypertexts was originally published on 3.5-inch floppy disk for Macintosh and PC computers in 1997; it was released later that year on CD-ROM for both platforms. Larsen reports that she produced the work on her Macintosh computer and had not seen the PC version until years later ("Interview"). The work was created with Storyspace 1.2C and requires 5.5 MB of space. It is the second major work by Larsen and follows two years after the success of her opus, Marble Springs(1993). Contained among the nine little hypertexts is Century Cross, a work that was published as a solo work two years after Samplers Version 1.0 was released.

  3. True North

    This description comes from Rebooting Electronic Literature Volume 2:

    Stephanie Strickland's True North came out in 1997 in two formats. First, it was published as a print book of poetry by the University of Notre Dame Press and won––that same year––the Poetry Society of America's Alice Fay Di Castagnola Award and the Ernest Sandeen Poetry Prize. It also appeared as a hypertext poem released on floppy disk for both PC and Macintosh computers by Eastgate Systems, Inc. As Strickland states in her “Prologue,” work on True North began in 1995 at N. Katherine Hayles's National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar but originally was conceived over a decade earlier when, influenced by the writings of Simone Weil, she developed an interest in finding a woman’s language.

  4. Zeit für die Bombe

    "Zeit für die Bombe" ist eine multilineare Erzählung, die ich 1997 fürs World Wide Web schrieb. Schon damals träumte ich davon, sie einmal in einem digitalen Buch zu lesen. Als die Erzählung beim Internet-Literaturpreis "Pegasus" der Wochenzeitschrift "DIE ZEIT" den 1. Preis gewann, rieten mir viele Leute dazu, die Quatschidee mit dem digitalen Buch schnell wieder aufzugeben und stattdessen ein vernünftiges, also gedrucktes Buch zu schreiben. Grund: Der Hypertext sei tot, und das schon länger. Ob ich denn das noch nicht bemerkt hätte? Womöglich aus purer Sturheit schrieb und programmierte ich trotzdem weiter Hypertexte ( "Hilfe!" und "Die Schwimmmeisterin"), bis das Nachrichtenmagazin "Der Spiegel" mir 2002 den zweifelhaften Ehrentitel "Veteranin der schwindsüchtigen Szene" verlieh. Immerhin erkannte ich, dass das Magazin damit so falsch nicht lag. Denn multilineare Erzählungen im Internet zu veröffentlichen, hatte unübersehbare Nachteile. Der größte davon war, dass die Leser diese gar nicht lasen, sondern vor allem darin herumklickten, und zwar so schnell, dass sie gar nichts lesen konnten.

  5. GRAMMATRON

    Inspired by Derrida's Of Grammatology, Mark Amerika experiments in GRAMMATRON with narrative form in a networked environment. Amerika retells the Jewish Golem myth by adapting it into the culture of programmable media and remixing several genres of text into the story's hybridized style, including metafiction, hypertext, cyberpunk, and conceptual works affiliated with the Art+Language group.

    Narrated from various authorial perspectives, the story introduces readers to Abe Golam, a pioneering Net artist who creates Grammatron, a writing machine. Endowed not with the Word (as in the original myth) but with forbidden data—a specially coded Nanoscript—the creature becomes a digital being that "contains all of the combinatory potential of all the writings." The Grammatron is the personification of the Golem, which is also a personification of Amerika the artist. While the Golem and its environment have been depicted in any number of literary adaptations and works, in GRAMMATRON, Mark Amerika creates a seemingly infinite, recombinant (text-)space in the electrosphere.

  6. my body — a Wunderkammer

    The author and artist Shelley Jackson has produced a corpus of work in print and electronic media that takes as its central focus the relationship between human identity and the body's constituent organs, fluids, connective tissues, and other parts. While her well-known Storyspace hypertext Patchwork Girl revisited the Frankenstein story from the viewpoint of a female monster, my body uses the HTML hypertext form to revitalize the memoir genre. As the reader selects elegantly drawn woodcut images of parts of the author's body, meditations and anecdotes associated with each body part are revealed.

    Taglined "a revolving haiku", this poem displays a three line haiku on the screen. After a few moments, a line is replaced by a new line, until the whole haiku slowly has shifted to a completely new poem.

  8. We Descend : Archives Pertaining to Edgerus Scriptor, Volume One

    A story of our far future, unearthed by a Scholar to whom it is the distant past. But for that far-off scholar, as for every reader, the paths followed and the connections forged among the diaries, letters, confessions, and artifacts lead only to further questions. Some documents speak to us of Egderus, a young boy at the isolated Mountain House. What -- or who -- lives in the rocky hills around him? What secrets bind his superiors in fear and silence? What is it that creeps out, undetected, to drive a man mad, or to tear him limb from limb? Why must Egderus later leave the Mountain House as amanuensis to the Good Doctor, interrogator and torturer? What intrigue surrounds one prisoner, the Historian, that makes the Good Doctor so relentless in his attack? Why, ultimately, is this Historian the one victim that Egderus attempts to rescue? Years later, as an old man at the Mountain House, Egderus uncovers only more mysteries. What did the Historian learn that drove him to his death? Does something live, still, in the rocks around him? And how shall Egderus pursue this disturbing legacy that could shake the foundations of his darkening world?
