    Afternoon was first shown to the public as a demonstration of the hypertext authoring system Storyspace, announced in 1987 at the first Association for Computing Machinery Hypertext conference in a paper by Michael Joyce and Jay David Bolter.[1] In 1990, it was published on diskette and distributed in the same form by Eastgate Systems.

    The hypertext fiction tells the story of Peter, a recently divorced man who one morning witnessed a deadly car crash where he believes his ex-wife and son were involved. He cannot stop blaming himself as he walked away from the accident without helping the injured people. A recurring sentence throughout the story "I want to say I may have seen my son die this morning" where [I want to say] is one of many lexias built into a loop which causes the reader to revisit the same lexia throughout the story. The hypertext centers around the car accident, but also reveals the multifarious ways of the characters' mutual promiscuity.

  2. Between Page and Screen

    Coupling the physicality of the printed page with the electric liquidity of the computer screen, Between Page and Screen chronicles a love affair between the characters P and S while taking the reader into a wondrous, augmented reality. The book has no words, only inscrutable black and white geometric patterns that—when seen by a computer webcam—conjure the written word. Reflected on screen, the reader sees himself with open book in hand, language springing alive and shape-shifting with each turn of the page. The story unfolds through a playful and cryptic exchange of letters between P and S as they struggle to define their turbulent relationship. Rich with innuendo, anagrams, etymological and sonic affinities between words, Between Page and Screen takes an almost ecstatic pleasure in language and the act of reading. Merging concrete poetry with conceptual art, “technotext” with epistolary romance, and the tradition of the artist’s book with the digital future, Between Page and Screen expands the possibilities of what a book can be.

  3. Bacterias Argentinas

    Bacterias argentinas is a dynamic model of autonomous agents that recombine genetic information eating one each other and where the genetic information is a narrative. The energy and staff circulate. Word is energy. A version of this model was used in the exhibition Juego doble (Double Game) in Mexico D.F. (Source: Maya Zalbidea) In bacterias argentinas Colombian digital artist and data visualization developer Santiago Ortiz creates a linguistic-multicellular environment that models the interactions between basic organisms in a virtual ecosystem. In Ortiz’s words, it is “a dynamic model of autonomous agents that remix genetic information by consuming one another, and in which genetic information is narrative.” In this Flash work, Ortiz explores the question of life as information by mapping linguistic elements onto color-coded “bacteria” that circulate freely in this bio-linguistic ecology.

  4. Anacrón: Hipótesis de un Producto Todo

    Anacrón, Hipótesis de un producto todo is the vertiginous text that calls to the dead and the imagination. Both the subjects are attached to Mexican culture since ancient times and more than ever in our actual global society. Anacrón is an eclectic aesthetic e-poem that aims to respect the linear textual reading of the poem while it explores the boundaries of collaboration, multimedia and video game. Gabriel, the poet, and Augusto, the bandit. The entire project has developed without meeting each other. All communication has been done by e-mail. The journey starts when Augusto found an abandoned book called Caja over a couch in a Cafe at Puebla city. Of course, he stole both: the coffee and the book.

  5. Collocations

    Collocations is a work of experimental writing that explores the philosophical implications of quantum mechanics by appropriating and transforming two key texts from Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein’s historic debates about the complementary relationship between position and momentum. By interacting with Collocations, the user turns into an experimenter, observing and physically manipulating the device to materialize unique textual configurations that emerge from within Bohr and Einstein’s original writings. Striking a balance between predetermined and algorithmically influenced texts, Collocations constructs a new quantum poetics, disrupting classical notions of textuality and offering new possibilities for reading.   6. unicode infinite

    This app developed for the iOS environment is a reworking of a video work titled Unicode (2012) which “shows all displayable characters in the unicode range 0 - 65536 (49571 characters). One character per frame.” The video lasts about 33 minutes and has a sound component which he didn’t use for the app. The app adds a simple user interface which allows speeding up or slowing down the character display, shaking for random access to the characters, and an interactive function that uses the touchscreen interface and the accelerometer. This is a conceptual work which allows us to appreciate the rich palette of characters and symbols written languages from around the world offer and can be accessed when encoded in the Unicode standard.
