  2. Fable Girls: A Living Photos Series

    Retellings of classic fairy tales and childrens' stories: Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Cindarella. The stories are told in a series of "living photos", that is images with limited video motion, and in some cases, sentences and phrases are used to tell the story. Readers for the most part move through the stories by clicking "next" arrows, but in some cases - for instance when Red meets the "wolf" - readers are given a choice that affects the rest of the story.

  3. Magic-Tree

    magic-tree is an interactive online narrative first published on the web in 2001, commissioned by Paul Bonaventura of the Laboratory at the Ruskin School, Oxford.

    The website uses animation, video, audio and printed text and was designed for the fastest internet connection of the time - 56K. At launch, a limited edition of boxes containing physical components of the story we offered free. The boxes were perfumed and contained a crystal ‘magic-tree’ kit, several mint/chocolate twigs, a bag of soil and some cherry pips.

    In its story, as well as its form, magic-tree addresses questions about how we interact with web fiction.

    The site only works with Internet Explorer and requires Quicktime. It takes a few hours to complete the four chapters.

  4. Book of Waste

    Book of Waste is a collection of bleak short stories that can be read in multiple directions. The text is often imposed against atmospheric photography and unstable video effects with accompanying ambient sound. In some stories, the text is manipulated or moves/transforms over time, adding to the work's overall sense of instability. One section requires the discovery of a short number code to gain access to it.

  6. Five Days

    This film was created in a very short amount of time during an experimental course in Bergen, Norway.

    The assignment consisted of everyone receiving a fictional character who had recently experienced a "strange event" and was sent to Bergen to try and figure out what the root cause was. Each student was put into a group of about four, and it was up to the team to figure out a way to tell a narrative, while still weaving together some very random stories, events, and details. Our group decided on showing our narrative via a film. There are perhaps some gaps in the narrative logic, but perhaps a little character info can help fill those.

    Jackson Sullivan: woke up on day on an island in his hometown with strange ruins tattooed onto his arm. He heads to Bergen to decipher them.

    David Butler: an older gentlemen possessing the diary of his explorer grandfather. Inside is information regarding Norse ruins...

    Aurora Berg: a British spy is doing her best to warn the world of potential harm.

    Liam Omar: a scuba diver who notices the strange rise in water levels in the Bergen area. What can it mean?

  7. Computer Poetry

    Silvestre Pestana programmed in BASIC, first for a Sinclair ZX-81 and ZX-82, and then, already with chromatic lighting, for a Sinclair ZX Spectrum, three poems respectively dedicated to Henri Chopin, E. M. de Melo e Castro and Julian Beck, which resulted in the Computer Poetry (1981-83) series. Pestana, a visual artist, writer and performer – who had returned from the exile in Sweden after Portugal’s Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 – brought diverse influences put forward with photography, video, performance, and computer media. From his creative production, it should be emphasized the iconic conceptual piece Povo Novo [New People] (1975), which was remediated by the author himself in the referred series of kinetic visual poems, or “infopoems” (Melo e Castro 1988: 57).

    Au cours de la performance Le dossier est vide, Juliette Mézenc lira un texte qui est un agencement/bégaiement créé à partir d’entretiens menés par Bourdieu ou Vollmann sur les questions de migration. Dans le même temps, Stéphane Gantelet fabrique des images en direct sur grand écran. La prolifération des fichiers créés lors des manipulations sur ordinateur, squelette numérique de la performance, entre dans un dialogue tantôt étroit tantôt lâche avec le texte lu pour conduire à la création d’un court film.

  9. SeeVeniceandDie

    Le poème au coeur de SeeVeniceAndDie a été écrit en 2005 pour "L'isola dei Poeti" - événement initié à l'occasion de la 51ème biennale de Venise - par Marco Nereo Rotelli sous le commissariat d'exposition d'Achille Bonito Oliva et Caterina Davinio pour Virtual Island. Ce poème est un genre de sabir ou autrement dit, un pérégrinisme. Mélange de plusieurs langues dans le même discours, SeeVeniceandDie met en scène, en médias, en programmes, ces actes de langages, à travers un automate de synthèse vocale qui lit dans sa langue naturelle, l'anglais et se risque aussi en français et en italien, deux langues qui me sont devenues - à moi - culturellement naturelles. Il a fallu "plier" quelque peu l'orthographe des mots pour faciliter l'interprétation de Vicky, voix synthétique féminine du système OSX, afin de parfaire sa prononciation. S'il a ici [ pour Internet ] la forme d'une vidéo de 8 minutes et 30 secondes, il est en fait un poème variable composé d'un prologue et trois actes, se joue au clavier et souris et répond aux sollicitations des lettres formant le mot "Venise" dans ses trois langues.

    1/2/3 is an elliptical videopoem based on Russian minimalist poet Vsevolod Nekrasov’s “Utopia” and footage from Mozhaysky region of Moscow. Each time three random photos containing a space where a text could appear are shown at three interactive screens. Being touched each photo transforms to video where one out of ten lines of Nekrasov’s poem appears. The viewer never knows which of these evasively poetic lines were documented or added with digital tools. (ELO 2015 catalog)
