  1. TRACES

    Traces is a collage of text, spoken word, sound, and digital projection. The text forms durational video and audio composed into 17 sections (excerpts included), which are triggered over the course of an hour in a continuous fashion. The video was designed to be incomplete and unfold over time--drawing attention to the chance encounter each person may have with it. It does not reveal the totality of its content, part of which falls outside of the frame. I worked with archival materials as I built this project (oral histories and personal collections). I was interested in these sorts of personal collections being displayed and open for perusal. As private spaces become redefined by digital possibilities, information is readily transferred from one form into another and meaning is subtracted and added along the way. Traces is my own collection. Photographs become data, which initiate recordings that are transcribed and then re-recorded. These then become projected text, and finally transform into granulated rhythmic pulsations and fragments of words, which becomes a vastly layered resonant soundscape felt as vibration through the body.

  2. mooon

    mooon (2015) is the fourth video made by Norwegian poet and artist Ottar Ormstad since 2009. Here again viewers encounter letter-carpets and a yellow y Ormstad identifies with and which he is known for. Different from the other videos, letter-carpets are not projected on still images, but for the first time on live video footage Ormstad shot on his Samsung S4 during travels in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Vilnius and Berlin in 2014. The video may be seen as a research for documenting water on the mooon. Like in his video natyr (2011) he's using a strong sound in the very start for creating a period of silence in the beginning of the work. Other references to his earlier works can also be found: The 'eau-poem' in the first part is closely related to his web-poem svevedikt (2006), and his first video LYMS (2009). Ormstad also continues his multi-lingual project using words from different languages intentionally without translation. It invites viewers for an individual experience of the video and visual poetry that is based upon the viewer's language background.

  3. The End: Death in Seven Colours

    The End: Death in Seven Colours is a non-linear Internet artwork made in the interactive authoring environment Korsakow. Seven deaths (corresponding to seven colours of the rainbow) are examined through the prism of popular culture and film in a vast, encyclopedic mash-up. The work presents an “exploded view” diagram of our culture’s relationship to death and narrative closure. Like a chose-your-own-adventure conspiracy theory, The End weaves together a paranoid meta-text organized around themes of the unknown, concealment, secrecy, and the shifting boundary between animal, man and computer in the post-human era. The deaths of Alan Turing, Sigmund Freud, Princess Diana, Jim Morrison, Judy Garland, Walter Benjamin, and Marcel Duchamp become the touchstones for many impractical segues and short circuits peppered with recurring motifs such as 4 a.m., His Master’s Voice, Snow White,The Rainbow, Chess, The Man Behind the Curtain, and an array of famous surrealist artworks that find new meaning in their entanglements with these stories.

  4. Talk with Your Hands Like an Ellis Island Mutt: A Recombinatory Cinema Toolkit

    Talk with Your Hands Like an Ellis Island Mutt is a recombinatory cinema project that utilizes video material from my digital lyric memoir DADDYLABYRINTH, which appeared in the ELO 2014 exhibition and later premiered at the ArtScience Museum of Singapore, to create an interactive, polylinear narrative cinema experience. From the video “selfies” of DADDYLABYRINTH I have culled individual hand gestures and, through image manipulation and repetition, created sixty-four separate videos eight to twelve seconds long that can be recombined using a variety of strategies, from the performative to the algorithmic.   6. Redshift & Portalmetal

    Redshift & Portalmetal asks: as climate change forces us to travel to the stars and build new homes and families, how do we build on this land, where we are settlers, while working to undo colonization? The story uses space travel as a lens through which to understand the experience of migration and settlement for a trans woman of color. Redshift & Portalmetal tells the story of Roja, who's planet's environment is failing, so she has to travel to other worlds. The project takes the form of an online, interactive game, including film, performance and poetry.

  7. Flewn

    “Flewn” is a melancholic and surrealistic story in book app format about an old whale walking on stilts through a desert in search of a lost ocean, carrying on its back jars with sea creatures it has rescued. Beautifully executed, “Flewn” offers two reading modes: the story mode, in which the reader explores the whale’s story by scrolling through the illustrations, accompanied with music, animation, video, and text; and the game mode, which offers an interactive exploration of the story space from the perspective of a little frog whose helicopter must be kept on air by pedalling and in this way help to spot the ocean everybody is looking for.

  9. Tales of Automation

    Tales of Automation is a collection of nine short "tales" that explore the effects of digital automation - algorithmic behavior modification, quantified feedback, life-logging, etc. - on daily life and subjectivity. Each tale is a never-ending cycle of asynchronous loops (of text and video) that present a single character at a moment of distracted attention, attempting and always failing to self-narrate experience in its complexity, materiality and abstraction. Notifications, data and spam intrude on consciousness at the cusp of self-awareness. Vision is composited, filtered and collaged. The multiplicity and variability of nested loops means that the short fictions are without beginnings or ends, or rather they begin in medias res and end when the nature of the characters' situation becomes evident.

    The work is best presented in full screen mode on any browser, but preferably Chrome. Interaction with each tale involves a simple click, page scroll or mouse movement. In Tale 7, the central image can be dragged to read what is underneath. There is no sound in this work.

  10. Fractalize 1: I've loved you from afar

    FRACTALIZE is a hypermedia fiction project created by Tony Vieira, with Lesley Loksi Chan and Arthur Yeung. The first installment, ”I've loved you from Afar,” is a fractal reminiscence of a romance across space and time. Created for Supercrawl 2017, a four day art and indie music festival in Hamilton, Canada, Fractalize is intended to exist both inside a gallery space as much as within the audience member’s smartphone. Narrative “fractals” will be delivered over the course of the five day ELO Conference and Festival via email and social media, with intentional knowledge gaps that users fill in based on their own experience, anxieties, and desires. Users experience the project in the form of VR/360º video gallery exhibit, video walks, web videos, photographs, original music, text messages, sound art, Spotify playlists, and social media posts. Characters within the narrative have their own social media identities which are regularly updated over the course of the exhibition, creating a blurring of the lines that separate reality and virtuality.
