Doutora em Comunicação e Cultura pela ECO-UFRJ (2003), possui grau de Mestre pela mesma instituição (1998), graduação em Psicologia pelo IP-UFRJ (1980), Complementação Pedagógica (Língua Inglesa) pela Universidade Santa Úrsula (1984). Atualmente é Docente e Pesquisadora do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação e Práticas de Consumo da ESPM, São Paulo, onde exerceu o cargo de coordenadora (2008-2010) e de coordenadora adjunta (2006-2008). Membro da coordenação editorial da revista Comunicação, Mídia e Consumo, Membro do Conselho Consultivo Deliberativo da ABCiber (Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Cibercultura), sócia da Intercom (Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicação) e da AoIR (Association of Internet Researchers), sócia fundadora da RIEC (Rede Iberoamericana de Estudos em Comunicação), pesquisadora do Núcleo Obitel-Brasil ESPM, parecerista de agências de fomento e periódicos acadêmicos. Seus interesses de pesquisa se concentram na área de Comunicação, com ênfase em Comunicação e consumo, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: comunicação e consumo, cibercultura, novas subjetividades, redes sociais e entretenimento.

Gisela S. de Castro holds a PhD in Communications and Culture from ECO-UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, 2003) as well as a Master’s degree from the same institution (1998), a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology by IP-UFRJ (1980), and a Supplementary Teaching degree (English) by Santa Úrsula University (1984). Currently she is a lecturer and researcher at the Post-Graduate Program in Communications and Consumer Practices at ESPM (Higher School of Marketing and Advertising), São Paulo, where she was coordinator (2008-2010) and adjunct coordinator (2006-2008). She is a member of the editorial coordination of the magazine Comunicação, Mídia e Consumo, member of the Deliberative Assembly of ABCiber (Brazilian Association of Cyberculture Researchers), founding partner of RIEC (Ibero-American Network of Communications Studies), researcher at the ESPM Obitel-Brasil Nucleus, and reviewer at funding agencies and academic periodicals. Her areas of research focus on the field of communication, with special emphasis on communication and consumption, working primarily in the following areas: communication and consumption, cyberculture, new subjectivities, social networks and entertainment.
